I just headed over to rec.autos.sport.cart, and they own the biggest troll
ever to be seen on usenet. This guy is a messed up IRL fan who is
contributing 75% of the posts to that newsgroup. He was called 'nik
zeppelin', now he is 'For Whom The Bell Tolls'. Any ideas on how to kick him
out?

Where did the word "troll" come from anyway?

It's a fishing term, meaning to drag a hook through a school of fish hoping
to catch one.  No skill needed..

Basically, it refers to someone who comes into a newsgroup looking for
controversy and utters obviously inflammatory statements which get some
people to 'bite'.  The others - the smarter 'fish' - learn to stay clear..

Thanks!
I understand the usenet meaning of the word but was curious where it came
from. In Norwegian a Troll is a mythical creature. Something like this:

Sadly, the only is it to totally ignore him, and use a killfile. It's
a pure 101 on wrecking a once great newsgroup. And as you said, i've
been using newsgroups since 93 and seen some cases over the years, but
this one is the king...

Isn't there a guy called Rik Zeppelin who used to be regular here?  He
wasn't a troll from what I remember...

Actually he, and others like him is the reason I stopped going to
rec.auto.sport.cart  I got tired of every post being dragged down into the
mud.  That, and his hourly CART stock reports was enough to send me packing.

There is a 'rik zeppelin' in r.a.s.c and he isn't a troll, but this guy is
'nik zeppelin'. They appear to be different people (ie the troll must have
got annoyed by 'rik' so he changed his name to 'nik').

Trolling as in trolling for fish, or fishing for a response... AKA
Trolling... AKA Troll

The CART and IRL usenet Newsgroups are a wastland of name calling and
abuse...

Just have everyone put him in a killfile.  Once he figures out that NOBODY
is paying attention, he'll change his name and annoy you again.  Repeat the
process.  Trolls biggest fear is no-one listening to them.  Sooner or later
he'll get lonely and head elsewhere.

I think it is sort of a double meaning, troll being a *** creature,
and trolling meaning fishing for or baiting other usenetizens into
angry emotional response.

If you ignore them, they will usually get bored and go away.
