No I don't think so.  "IF" your system matches up with the Xbox then
you will be fine, but if your vid card, soundcard, memory, bios,
motherboard...if ANY of those(or more!) are not 100% Xbox compatible,
you will be on the outside looking in.

Ok let me rephrase that slightly....ZERO new products that don't match
exactly the Xbox specs.  The thing the Xbox "could" do is FREEZE
development.  Developers will love that.  Hardware producers will hate
it.  All inovation 'could' stop.  but remember, all this hinges on
whether the Xbox is a sucess or not.  My statement was prefaced by
a disclaimer.  "IF" the Xbox is a sucess, the pc as a *** platform
will die and we will be forced to type or scan or worse yet crunch
numbers on them.

 prediction?

ps, why do Brits like the Number 5?  Nige was known as Red5 and
Richards Burns the fast Subaru Rally driver also uses the #5.  Further
proof comes from Monty Python...."one, two, FIVE!"   Need I say more?

Well, let's see the specs...from what I know, the Xbox is going to be, when
it finally comes out, a below-entry-level computer (given that a Ghz chip
will prolly be entry level by then) for playing games.  Weak ones.  Besides,
there are some games that are just so much better suited to a computer -
racing, flying, Command & Conquer type games, anything where you need to use
more than 4 buttons at a time...  Not to mention a TV isn't hi-res enough...

You can try to throw the Xbox at me all you want but you'll have to pry my
COMPUTER out of my cold dead hands!!!

I still don't agree. Most people use a PC as a "work"station, while also
playing on them. Dedicated gamers COULD switch to the XBox, but most of
them would miss the flexibility and configurability of a generic PC, so
they won't buy a closed system (they esp. don't have a lot of problems
with getting a PC configured).

Your mouse has moved. Windows must be restarted for the change
to take effect. Reboot now?

I'm not saying you or I will stop using a computer.  What I'm saying
is
the money-grubbing-suits in most publishing firms won't release
development funds for testing and rewriting code to match the hundreds
of
possible computer setups.  If you have an A3d card but the Xbox uses
only
D3d, then eventually the programs will not include A3d support.  If you
have a 3dfx Vid card, but the Xbox only supports D3d, then eventually
there will be no native ports.(think about all the trouble users of
Matrox, Nvidia, and 3dfx have in running generic D3d code.  Each program
has to be rewritten several times to adapt to the different
implementations
of the same API.
Factor in that the Sega Dreamcast is already running winCE, and you
may
find increasing pressure from the money-end of the programming effort,
to
limit the compatiblity to only that which matches the Xbox.
(but now my standard disclaimer.  The Xbox could be a total and
complete
flop, in which case we will all need to make sure our computers can
speak
Playstation 2.)
Remember 3d0 and Trip Hawkins?  His idea was to create a video
standard, like
Creative's soundblaster standard, that would eliminate the need to
spends
buckets and bushels of cash trying to get code to work with dozens of
different
vid-cards.  That is the same kind of pressure the Xbox "could" exert
except the
entire subsystem would then be locked in, not just the video.
Don't have an Intel motherboard?  Using Via bios chips?  I'd be
worried.

X-Box will have a keyboard and mouse available and be able to use a monitor.
Just for the record.

On the following date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 09:14:38 -0700, said person(s)

What planet are you on?
I'm running ALL of today's games on a Celeron P2 466.
So your telling me in less than year that 1000 is going be standard?
Bull hockey.
That's what Marketing wants you to believe. Hell I ran most games on a
P133 when most people were claiming a P2 200MX was the "standard"
Maybe for you folks that make over $100,000 a year you can afford to
raise the "standard" but don't try to make everyone else think they
have to throw out a fortune. I'm sure MS has studied the competition
and knows what they need to make it work. I have yet to see a MS
product that didn't make gobs of money.

It's too soon to say. The DC/PS2 are the first consoles with enough
processing power to make it feasible.

I did say that it will be below entry level...

Why?

Guess what...both Intel and AMD have GHz chips out...Xbox is what, a year
away?  How long does it take for the average chip to filter down from
top-end to entry level?  Given that chip speeds more or less double every
year (look at the numbers...it's a fact), and an entry level system is in
the 450-550 MHz range (about half of a top-end)...in one year, GHz chips
will be entry level.

I never said that the Xbox is going to be slow...but I have (begin Y2J
ripoff :) NEVER, EEEEEEEVER (end Y2J :) seen a console that could beat a
computer, especially of late.  PSX:  Hideous lookin!!!  N64:  Not much

Screenshots from PS2:  I REALLY, REALLY hope that Gran Turismo looks a LOT
better than that before it gets here...it looks worse than Dreamcast when it
should have an extra year's worth of horsepower behind it!!!  Neither
Dreamcast or PS2 can come close to what my Celeron 450a with a V2 or G200
can do!!  Haven't seen any Xbox screenshots yet, but I doubt it will be much
better.  Besides, Dreamcast has a few problems - *** habit of frying to
death if it isn't ventilated enough, cuts your fingers in the cd tray,
controllers fall apart...

By the way, before I got these computers a year ago, guess what I had?  A
PENTIUM 90!  So don't go whining how you ran your stuff on a P133 until
you've really experienced how slow even Windows goes with 8MB of RAM!!!

Xbox is going to be fast...but PCs will just be faster.
