Welllll, I have the same setup and found the same limitations as you
did. I use Left and Right to steer, the trigger button for
Acceleration, and the top button for Brake. I use my kbd for shift
up/down. I don't bother with the throttle control on the joystick.
This was the best overall compromise for me.

Joystick Steering

Greetings all you racing fans,

I am fairly new to sim racing and since I just got ICR2 and a CH flightstick,
I have a question about steering with it. Basically, what is the most
preferable way to steer with a joystick? My current assumption is the up
direction for acceleration, down for braking, left and right for steering,
the two buttons are for shifting. But with this setup, I find it hard to
do fine tuned steering when my stick is all the way forward (full
acceleration). So far, I steer with the joystick left/right and accelerate
and brake with the two buttons. I haven't tried manual shifting yet, but
would probably just use the keyboard for that instead. I was wondering if
there are any advantages or disadvantages to different ways of steering, or
just personal opinions on this topic. Thanks.

Has anyone tried using two joysticks - one for steering
and one for acclerate/brake - or using the additional
throttle control on some joysticks as accel/brake ?  I was
wonderring how easy it would be to coordinate the two separate
actions.  I'm sure it would be easier to drive more smoothly
if you had variable control over the accelerator and brake
rather than the on/off action of buttons, and you could still
use them for gear changes.

Ant thoughts ?

I can't get to grips with steering, throttle and braking on the stick. I
prefer to use the keyboard for throttle and brakes 'A' & 'Z', with the
joystick buttons for changing gear.

I tried this for about five minutes, and it was awful. :) Just wasn't
able to coordinate the moves. Maybe other people could do better
(piano players)?
My control setup of choice right now is Joy axis for steering and
braking plus Joy button (& traction help) for accelerating. Works
fine, but ultimately, I will need a wheel and pedals.

One of the things you guys are missing using the buttons for the
throttle/brake is that analog input.  When you press the button
you are basically gunning the throttle/brake to the floor board.
This isn't too bad with the throttle - sort of like "blipping"
the engine.  I found this to be really hard to do nice smooth
braking.  It seems the overall play with this setup is really
jerky.  Can you imagine driving your own car with buttons for gas
and break?  I think it would be a pretty jerky ride.
