Help with Dover Setup

by Michael E. Carv » Sun, 08 Sep 1996 04:00:00

: Help!  I've tried a ton of setups for Dover. I found good setups for
: qual. and for one fast lap, but cannot get one or figure one out for a
: full 50% race with opponents set at 100%. I can keep up for 50 laps or
: so, then my tires are gone. Computer driven cars can go full blast for
: 68 to 75 laps before needing tires.

It seems (and Papyrus has confirmed) that the computer cars suffer
little to no tire wear.  At some of the tracks where "tar" wear is
great, the computer cars can always out last you.  The only solution I
have is to alter the Track.TXT file and force the computer cars to a pit
window that matches your actual need to come in for tires.

This is the SPDWY line in the track.txt file.  At Dover the computer
cars will normally come in between 65 to 75 laps for tires and fuel.
Change the following line in the DOVER.TXT file:
SPDWY 0 65 75
   to
SPDWY 0 45 55
This will force the computer cars to pit sometime around when your tires
start to go away.

One caveat:  If you race on Hawaii, make sure you use the original
TRACK.TXT files.  If you use altered TRACK.TXT files you will be booted
off the system.

If you think that 68 to 75 laps full blast for AI cars is crap, I think
it is, then you can alter the dover.txt file and reduce the laps between
pitstops for the AI cars to around 50 or so.  I pretty sure it
is the SPDWY line that reads 0 65 75, with 65 75 the pit window.  Change
this to what you want and go and have a good competitive race on your
own setup.  I was in the same boat as you were with tires going out too
quickly.  If you really want to be a cheater you could change the TIRES
or TIRE2 line in the dover.txt file for longer tire life, but that is
a bit much.
