I'm not quite sure what did it - I went back to Logitech Profiler V3.25C
with the LWFF connected via the serial port and installed my SB16 but
disabled them all in Device Manager. I then re-booted and re-enabled the
sound card. I re-booted again to make sure then enabled the "fake" gameport
and the LWFF. Still OK. Re-booted with the LWFF in the USB port. All present
and correct. I now installed Profiler V3.30 and tried to patch it but got a
"ERROR: unable to read file!" message. This was all at 900 MHz so now I
wound up the clock to 1.3 GHz (it's a 1GHz part) and tweaked the RAM. That
seemed OK with GP3 but GPL crashed very quickly. Back down to 1.2 GHz and
less aggressive RAM timing and it all seems stable.
At last! All graphics options. All sounds. 19 opponents. Max resolution and
36 fps all the time, well except if starting from the back of the back of
the grid. GP3 with less than 100% PO. Finally my hardware has caught up with
the software.
Of course, now I have a "new" GPL to learn - 19 opponents and all that sound
make things even more difficult than they were before...

P.S. I still can't install V3.62 but I don't care right at this moment :-)
