f1rs: yet more questions

by rob » Sun, 22 Feb 1998 04:00:00

Hello all,

I realize f1rs has had a lot said about it already, but I still have more
questions.

After not figuring out the french demo about a month ago and quickly tossing
it,
I got the english demo tonight (the 11 separate files are torturous).

I was almost surprised to have no problems getting the thing to run, because
of all
that's been said about it and because of my 'homebuilt' cyrix system (not
that it
has problems with other programs).

Anyway, my questions are:

1) what's up with the throttle?  I turned 'sensitivity' up to 100% and hit
f7 for manual
transmission, yet from a standing start I slam the throttle and cannot 'peel
out' at all.
I feel like I'm not really in control.

2) There's a giant 'dead center' in my steering control using the joystick.
I don't see this in any other
games, but only the last 20% or so of throw to each end (right/left)
actually controls the
steering.  Hence I have poor right/left control and it just doesn't feel
right.

Thanks for any help,

Rob.

I haven't really taken much notice to the steering, but the wheel spin or lack
of it is due to the demo having the easy options turned on.  The game is much
better and harder to control.

I appreciate the reply.  From what I gather, the game really is better.
Judging by the demos alone, I would have liked precision racing better than
f1rs.  But All the things said on this ng have given me reason to believe
differently.

Just got the demo downloaded and installed, fairly impressed so far, little
dissappointed in the sound though. I have noticed I have to set my controls
for my T2 every time I launch the demo, does the full version have the
ability to save your controls so you don't have to do this each time?

Yes this was my problem with the demo also.  The good news is that id does save
the settings.

I too have downloaded the English demo, and was somewhat disappointed with
the "realism" ie unable to wheel-spin or lock-up.
I asked in this newsgroup a few weeks ago whether this was normal, and was
assured that in the full version, it is easier to wheel-spin/lock-up than
GP2.
I think that the demo only allows you to play in "easy" rather than
"realistic" mode in the main menu - you will notice that you can't click the
realistic option.

In my opinion, its crazy that the demo for a simulation, only gives you an
arcade type mode - how are you meant to determine if it is a good sim?

I had the same problem with my Destiny wheel when set on Jstick
Change the setting s to T2 with adaptor, no dead zone anymore :)

This has probably been mentioned several times before but are you
using the DirectX5 joystick applet?  And have you configured the wheel
as a custom joystick with the racing wheel checkbox enabled?  If its a
T1 or T2, there is a Thrustmaster utility to configure the wheel.
Also, there is a patch for DINPUT that allows adjusting the deadzone.
(I think I saw it on www.f1racingsim.com).

Just as a reference point, my TSW wheel had very tight control in
Win95 but had a large deadzone in NT4 until I installed the NT4DX5
patch which made it similar to Win95's feel.

 Hope this helps.
