Excessive Hard Drive activity???

by Peter Coo » Mon, 27 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I have a problem with nearly all of my Racing games, the hard drive seems to
be in use in what I would call an unnecessary amount of time considering the
specs of my system, for example in rc2000, it causes the video to jump from
section to section, making it all but impossible to get smooth inputs from
the steering wheel, I usually find it happens 2 to 3 times each section.

My system is as follows:

PIII 450
ABit BH6 Rev 2 Motherboard
128 MByte SDRAM 100Mhz
SB Live Value
26 Gbyte HDD (2 x 13 Gbyte Drives)
12 MByte Diamond Monster II
32 MByte Viper 770

Win98 SE
DirectX 7.0a
Latest Sound Drivers from Creative

Any suggestions to alleviate this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Peter Cook

You happen to have Office97?  Fast Find will do such things.  Also, if
W98 Task Scheduler is kicking in with a scan or defrag, it'll wreck the
hell out of your frame rates.  ;-)

And shut off any anti-virus software you may have running in the background
trying to double-check every single file access that happens.

1) If you have MSOffice, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and close OSA and FastFind.  You
can also disable FastFind (an absolutely pointless utility) somewhere in
there.

2) Make sure nothing but what the game needs is running.  (Explorer,
SysTray, and the game's program should be all there is in the Close Program
dialog box.)

3) You have 128 MB RAM - try shrinking (or deleting!) your swapfile if you
still have problems.

This is good advice, but rather than shutting them off every time you start
your computer, you can just delete the icons for these things from the
startup group.

If something is loading from an ini file or the registry instead of the
startup group, you can change this by typing 'msconfig' in the run box on
the start menu.  The last tab lists all the stuff that happens automatically
when you boot the computer.  Uncheck everything you don't want. (especially
those annoying MS Office 'features')

Oh yeah..after you kill Fastfind, go delete the index files it creates in
the root of your C: drive.  They have ffas in their names, but I forget
exactly what they are right now.  You'll recognize them when you see them.

>>Msconfig? I don't have that one.  Is that supposed to be in win95?

Nope, it's Win98.  I forget that some folks haven't upgraded their OS in the
last 5 years.  It's one of the many handy little improvements that make 98 a
good idea.

Another good thing to do is to click on Start, Run and type "msconfig"
, click on the start-up tab and you can actually remove any unwanted
programs starting up in windows be that via the start up folder or the
win.ini, or even system.ini. It's difficult to tell you which ones you
should disable since I can't look at your pc physically, but as a
general rule when you press ctrl+alt+del apart from explorer, systray
and a couple of other needed programs should be running.

Mauricio.

Well, shrinking your swap file wouldn't help as more paging would
occur. If you have enough hdd space on your machine, find a clean
drive, defragment it and then create a static swap file of 512 meg.
That along with running msconfig and unchecking a few boxes in the
start-up tab should solve your problem.

Mauricio.

Telling someone to disable their swap file is possibly the worst
advice that could be given out. That means that programs will be
limited only to the actual physical amount of memory installed,
causing a considerable drop in performance, some systems won't even
boot correctly.
If a static swap file is created then windows doesn't have to resize
it as it does when its required, in a sense the swap file is your
extra memory, very slow extra memory as programs can address up to 4
gig.

Cheers.

Mauricio.
