(OT) Computer Problem

I'm looking for a News Group to ask about a problem I'm having that I
can't figure out.  So first, are there any NGs that you can suggest?

        My problem is...

every so often my HDD led will light up and my computer slows right
down to almost a stand still.  I don't hear the HDD working at all
though.  I haven't paid any attention to any kind of sequences that
makes this happen but I do know that it happens a lot.

Closing Netscape, NS will clean the NGs and email message bodies to
save disk space, while this happens about half way through it the HDD
led will light up and the cleaning process is halted till after the led
turns off.

Running GPL online or off line randomly this will happen and the screen
will freeze for those two or three second. resulting in warp laps and
the like.

having the computer sit idle while I eat lunch with no computer activity
of any kind this will happen.

As I said I have yet to figure out any kind of a sequence that would
make this happen.  It's as if the HDD park it's self and gets stuck for
a few seconds.

sounds like you're running out of virtual memory and the delay is Windows
playing with the swap file (I'm assuming you're using Windows, if not, it
could be something similar for the OS you are using)

a very good newsgroup and your best bet is alt.windows98 or alt.windows95
depending on which you use....  if you don't use Windows and your newsgroup
browser lets you search for a text string, just type in the operating system
you use and it will find one for you...

Sounds like what happenned to a friend's PC.  I found that a scandisk would
fail at around 90%.  His HDD was screwed.  I bought him some time by
repartitioning the bad area out - his drive was 1Gb and I made two virtual
drives (if that's the correct terminology) 800Mb (C:) and 200Mb (D:).  I
don't know much about the physical aspects of HDDs but we were lucky in that
it was only the 'end' of his disk that had a problem.  Worked perfectly
until he got a replacement.

Hope I'm wrong!!

Try alt.computer.workshop

Sound like a swap file problem to me, but I'm only guessing.

Before swapping out the HDD or re-formatting or any of that make sure you
don't have Office "FastFind" or Corel "Quickfind" or some such thing in your
startup group.
They periodically scan you system and can cause all kinds of odd behavior.

It's Ok to be going nowhere....

DELETE FASTFIND!  I went for months trying to figure out why my hard drive would run like crazy for no reason and slow everything
down. Everyone told me it was virtual memory, swap files, and other problems but nothing helped. Then I pressed Alt+Ctrl+Delete, End
task on several running tasks and when I did it to FastFind the problem stopped.  FastFind is a MS office program that will search
your hard drive for documents or files so they will be easier to locate when you need them. The search slows everything down. You
dont need FastFind so delete it from the Startup folder.
Hope this is the problem.

I was never POSITIVE that those files came from FastFind.  They're gone
NOW...thanks...

I would hardly take my word as confirmation of much of anything in most
cases, but in this case I believe myself to be correct.  I moved those files
to another folder when I saw them because I didn't know what they were.
Before long they reappeared.  It was only after I disabled Ffind that they
stopped regenerating, ergo, they were its by-product and could be 86ed.

    Glad I could help.
