Wanna see the ugliest race car...

The Ugliest race car I've ever seen was an Austin Maestro Turbo Diesel
Automatic (I'm not kidding!) in a saloon car race last year at Castle Combe.

Although I'd say it's probably the worst possible car for track racing it
was by no means last.

When I visited 2 years ago, the car was on display at Donnington Park
museum.

Ugliest cars I ever saw?
Anything from the 2000 grid would fit that bill nicely !

That'll be the March 711.

Peterson actually took that car to four second places in 1971 and finished
runner up in the championship. Dem was da days when you could buy a chassis
and a Cossie and go racing with the big boys at Grands Prix <sigh>

Naa, I don't think the current cars are that ugly, compared to all those
seventies' abominations people have presented here. The problem is that
they all look identical.

BTW, I understand that in the past F1 cars used to be painted according
to some kind of scheme of national colors. Do the modern cars pay any heed
to this tradition?

  Red was Italy.
Green was England
Blue was France
Silver was Germany(?)
Ferrari developed a specific '*** Red' color that has been
bastardized by the Marlboro Orange-Red they are forced to wear now.
The Ligier/Prost still run blue.
The Lotus colors were green but none of the current English teams run
a strick British Green.  However the Jaguar team does run a shade of green.
the rest carry sponsorhsip colors not national colors

Silver was the traditional German racing color due to a special happening:
Somewhen a car was to heavy to fulfil the regulations. So the mechanics
scratched off all the paint during the night and the car started aluminum-silver
on the next day.

Later white became the official German racing color.

No, I can believe it's a significant weight savings on a jumbo jet.  But, we're
talking about a single-seater racing car, not a 747...<g>
