Alex Zanardi - any Updates?

He is now awake and in a stable condition. Even though it's still critical,
because any infect can cost his life.
The wounds are healing as they have expected it. This was posted today at
www.racing1.de (only in german language).

He is having an operation every 48 hrs to clean the wounds and examine
for any additional pieces of wreckage that may be concealed. Go to
www.cart-racing.com for the latest and best news.

"A scheduled surgery was conducted to clean out wounds and make sure
no pieces of debris from the injury remained," Schaffartzik explained.
"The procedure lasted two hours and went well [and] is consistent with
the practice for this type of injury. It is expected that this type of
surgery will be performed every 48 hours over the next several days.
Zanardi is in critical but non-life-threatening condition. He is
stable and doctors are starting to reduce medication, which has placed
him in a medically-induced coma."

Looked to me like Zanardi hit a patch of moisture at the exit of pit road
and when he accelerated the back end broke loose and he crossed the grass
onto the track.

from our view point in the US broadcast, you couldn't see why he spun.
The ESPn view didn't show Zanardi's car first spinning.  They had him
leaving the pits, then they cut to Kenny Brack zooming around the last turn.
Next thing we saw was the Zanardi car bouncing over the grass and onto the
track..

Your point. As i said, when Zanardi left pit road he went through a patch of
water(or something wet). They showed Zanardi going through the grass so i
assume that he spun there. Makes sense to me.

Alex Zanardi - any Updates?

Yes and I should point out...the latest update on cart.com says he is
awake and doing about as well as could be expected under the circumstances.
We can only hope he survives the next few weeks when infections could
quickly turn deadly.
A well deserved thanks to the track medical crews and the hospital staffs.
Hopefully Z will find life in his family.

Alex Zanardi - any Updates?

by Hosc » Sun, 23 Sep 2001 02:40:34

I was at the Lausitzring last Saturday. Alex was much too quick at the exit
of the pit lane.
He hit the grass and couldnt control the car any more. Alex Tagliani had no
chance to avoid him.

Greetings and a good recovery for Alex Zanardi
Marc

Alex Zanardi - any Updates?

Didn't one of the Cool Green cars (Franchitti, I believe) retire near the
pit exit, spilling some sort of fluid from the engine?

I was in Turn 1, and Zanardi spun right in front of me. I watched him
in the pits, and all the way to the crash. His rear wheels just lost
grip. Too heavy on the gas, probably.

I did not notice any "moisture"- it was Eurospeedway Lausitzring, not
Rockingham!
The sun was shining for about two hours, it was a little windy (or was
that the cars?), and many cars, including Zanardi, made pit stops
before.

True, but I think that was way off the pit exit line. Also a fair bit
earlier in the race.

It was simply a terrible accident.  Pure bad luck :(

I didn't see the one that Park was in, but it sounds like a similar
situation.
