GPL, GP3 etc. on Matrox - anyone?

by John Fryat » Sat, 25 Aug 2001 23:29:21

Hi,

Does anyone here run GPL and GP3, or other racing sims, on a Matrox
G450 or G550?

I am getting a new PC (1GHZ+, 512Mb RAM) soon-ish and want a good
video setup. For doing photographic editing etc. I want a good 2D
card, and I also want a dual head capability, bot of which say Matrox
to me.

However, I also want good 3D for GPL etc. So, does anyone here use a
Matrox for this, and is it any good?

I have looked at GeForce, but reports say the 3D performance isn't
that great, so that's out. - Unless you know different of course.  ;-)

(I am currently running a Matrox G200, which has served me well, so I
guess I have a little brand loyalty. I did need to add a Voodoo 2 for
GPL though, as the D3D add-on for GPL didn't work too well.)

Thanks,   John

I meant 2D, of course.  :-)

I run GPL with a G400 and it works fine. I don't run all of the new graphics
goodies (hi-res wheels,***pit,...) so I can't comment on how much of an
effect those things make.
I don't have GP3 so I can't help you there.

I've been a long time Matrox fan because of the card's excellent balance
between 2D and 3D performance, not to mention the great dual head feature,
but I've heard that the newer Nvida and ATI cards are really closing the gap
in regards to 2D performance. Meanwhile, Matrox is now a generation behind
in 3D performance.

I also do a lot of photo and graphic editing along with 3D design, CAD, and
word processing on my rig.  If I were to replace my graphics card today I
would probably get an ATI Radeon VE with the dual outputs. It has more
features than the GXXX cards and seems to do just about everything they can
do for about the same price.

Just make sure you do your homework ( http://www.racesimcentral.net/ is a great
start ) and get a card that has the features you want.

Hi John,

I run a G400 perfectly in GP3, GPL and N4 - I'm on 1.3ghz, 512mb.

Hmm... my G200 runs pretty sweetly since I changed from OpenGL beta to
D3D.  Certainly a big step up in frame rate between those two.

Rob,

Excellent, that sounds better!  The other option, using a GeForce
isn't good for me as the 2D performance is not that great (I'm told).
Matrox again for me then.
