Nascar Demo - problems?

by Darrel David Cher » Sun, 25 Sep 1994 03:06:26

Hi all,
I downloaded the nascar demo last night. To echo everyone else, the
graphics were smoooooth! (486/66). But, I am having 2 problems, one
with sound and one with joystick calibration. Is anyone running a
soundblaster 16 and successfully getting on the race track w/o
having the game lock up? If I do SB 8 emulation, I can get out on the
track, but there is NO sound on the track (although I get music on menus).
Also the game doesn't remember joystick calibration, and it is a PAIN to
get to the screen to recalibrate it. Anyone else had these problems, or
know if it could be a system problem. I have 16 megs of ram, and ICR
works great, so I'm a little confused here. Thanks!

I think that sound emulation is a problem at the moment, from all reports, but
if I were you I'd check the IRQ address.  You should hear the music AND the
track noises -- could be a faulty address.

I have to agree with the IRQ problem.  I am running an SB 16 and have no
problems with either sound or it remembering the joystick calibration...

Agreed!  I'm using a Sound Galaxy in Soundblaster mode and only get menu
music, no other sounds.

I'm using a Soundblaster and I had the same problem.  To fix it, I used
the setup program (look in the demo directory) and changed the IRQ setting
to the correct number.  Now I get engine and skidding sounds in the game,
however, I no longer get the menu music.  I can live with that, though!

A few things that helped me:

In SETUP, when it asks about your "MIDI", select
"FM synthesis" for the SB16, (not MPU-401). If at all possible, use the SB16
default IRQ (5) and DMA (1) settings for the jumpers on the SB16 board and
in the NASDEMO setup program. Also, make sure you are using joystick port
ONE, not two. NASDEMO does not seem to like joystick port two for steering and accel.

Also, need I state the obvious: make sure your COM ports and modem do
not conflict with with the SB16 IRQ and DMA.

Lastly, make sure you have enabled the sounds from MIDI and  voice in SB16SET and
turned up the volume (I forgot to once.)

I hope this helps. Good luck.
