FPU performance Question.

by Tomo Bysted » Thu, 25 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Hi all,

I recall a posting a week or so ago where someone suggested that floating
point performance isn't key when running GP2 (or other sim) in a
discussion about someone's AMDs 5x86 133MHz processor. I was wondering if
any knowledgeable people out there could confirm/refute this as I have
read that the FPU is used heavily in 3D graphics. This also questions the
suitability of the Cyrix 6x86 series of processors for GP2, as their FPUs
are somewhat slower than their PENTIUM counterparts (although their
perfomance benchmarks is comparable in other performance test).

Anyone who knows, please enlighten me as I am considering a processor
upgrade in the near future.

Cheers,
Tomo.

FPU performance Question.

I ran the frame per second test on my Cyrix 133 and with every thing swiched
on it estimates FPS at 13.4 (thats SVGA btw) and with no sky, hills, smoke, no
textures in mirror and trackside deatil to meduim, it estimates it at 21.3
FPS.(m/c spec is 686-133, 32mb edo, 2mb S3 Trio 64 Video card).
Processor occupancy varies from between 80-110% at Pacific Gp to over 350% at
Monaco.
Just in case you wanted to know.
