GP2 - FPU based or not?

by Ray » Sat, 14 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Can anyone confirm for me whether or not GP2 is an FPU based DOS game or
not?  I am trying to decide whether to spend the extra bucks to get an
Intel P166 versus getting the cheaper Cyrixw P166+.  Apparently, the
Cyrix chip only performs like a Intel P133 in FPU performance?

Thanks in advance!

I don't think GP2 uses the FPU.  I have a Cyrix P150+ and I am very happy=

with it.  Using GP2 log:on, the CPU speed note was 320, and many P166=20
received about the same note.  If you buy a CPU mostly for GP2, the Cyrix=
=20
P166+ will seem very fast!

As you can see when installing, the game says it does not use the FPU.
IMHO, this is sort of silly, given the monumental amount of
calculations the game has to do.

I have a P166+, and GP2 log:on reports a CPU speed of 356.

I believe GP2 is not FPU based, so you're best bet is the Cyrix. I think
Quake is the only major game which use the FPU at the moment.
