PCI 2.1 enabled or disabled for sims?

by Clark Arch » Sun, 04 Jan 1998 04:00:00

The recent discussion about whether the videor cards which say they
require a PCI 2.1 compliant motherboard really need one got me to
check into my system.  It's a Gigabyte GA586TX2 board and I had PCI
2.1 set to 'Disabled'.  I used Wintune97 (I know not the most
in-depth, but very repeatable) to check my system in both PCI
configurations, as well as dmatest (the V1000 utility).

Well, with PCI 2.1 enabled, my system picked up about 5% in both
integer and floating point performance (why?), about 10% each in RAM
reads and writes, but lost about 15% in RAM copies(!).  Do any of you
other sim racers have any thoughts on the best way to set this BIOS
value?

BTW, I'm running a modest system with a K6/200 w/MMX, Intergraph
I3D100, and a Diamond Monster 3D.

Thanks,
Clark
