Correcting the statement:  you can get a virus from a file received as an
attachment to an e-mail message; you *cannot* get a virus by reading an
e-mail message.  When will the spreaders of this nonsense figure that part
out?

Not so, not so.  If I change the extension on an infected Word file to
.txt and then open it from within Word, it's still gonna give me the
virus!  If I double-click the misnamed .txt file, a PC will attempt to
open it with Notepad (which is further proof of how stupid Windoze is) and
fail.

Well said!!! You can get a virus if you execute the e-mail attached
file if it is infected.

Phillip Ray Lyles:
The "net" has been around a whole lot longer than this hoax has been
around. About 20+ years longer. Nice try, tho.

madh:
You can get a virus by viewing macro infected DOCuments. Also, if Netscape
gets lame enough that they Java-enable their email, then the possibility of
an email virus will arise. (Has Netscape gone that far yet? I quit using
it, so I don't know...)

I couldn't help but add my two cents :)

If e-mail ever becomes infectable, I'm sure Symantec and McAfee will
be there to cash in on it :)

raw e-mail (plain text) cannot be infected, however it is "POSSIBLE"
(this doesn't mean it will, it's just POSSIBLE) that an HTML (MIME)
type e-mail containing... well I'm not going to give anyone ideas.
Let's put it this way, if it ever becomes possible I'm sure Symantec
and McAfee will be there to cash in on it :)

This might not be _completely_ true.  If you or your mail program is idiotic
enough to run attachments blindly then you could get, and would deserve to
get, a virus.

Or you could waste the whole 10 seconds it takes to scan the file...

If you call those macro programs a "virus" I think they fall more
toward Trojans. Also only if you use a program that will run the
macros without first consulting you. On my computer I decide.

I wonder ?  Did anybody ever think that the best way to get an e-mail
virus spread would be to title at as a virus warning ?

But hey, I would still read them.
