Guys,

I'm getting a bit fed up with the AI in GPL. They seem to drive through me,
as if I'm not there.

e.g. I start from pole. I've got the inside line. I'm up the inside of
(usually) a lotus going into the first corner. He's wide, I'm ahead, yet he
always tags my rear wheel with his front and takes me out!

Is there an update to the AI, or is it just annoying, or is it me?

I don't think it's me, because watching the replays clearly shows me ahead,
and he should lift and slot in behind, but he simply drives through my rear.

What's going on?

I don't race the AI much, but in my experience they will usually concede the
place if you are clearly ahead. Maybe you aren't sticking to the inside line
for long enough? Unless you are a second a lap quicker or more, it'll
usually take two or three corners to decisively complete a pass, not just
one quick move.

Oh trust me, they drive right through us as well.

Nope, it's not you - this is the biggest (playability) flaw in GPL I can
think of, imho. There *ARE* places they will let you through nicely -
diving inside at the Hugenholtz hairpin at Zandvoort for instance, or
going inside at Parabolica (mostly).

Problem is, they do it only in *some* places, not every corner. Your job
is to figure out in which corner they'll yield and it's relatively safe
to pass (see above), and where better not... (that is, most corners - sigh).

Personally, I've always wondered why Papy couldn't implement a simple
'if other car is closer than 5 inch, move away and/or slow down' rule
for the AI. As it is, they're downright stupid in most places.

At least it's not personal, then! :-D

sigh).

So there's no AI fixes available, like for F1C?

I finally got myself one of those! GPLRank +100.997 :-/
Mind you it's the 61.224 delta on the Nurburgring that's killing it. Guess
what I'll be working on... ;-)

If you can get round all the other tracks but just find you keep going off
at the 'ring, try taking an F2 car. You'll be more likely to get a time, and
they have a better grip to power ratio than any of the F1 cars.

Oh, there are - in the usual GPL add-on places, use Google Groups and
the forums at racesimcentral.com as a starting point.

Problem is though, they're all different (so you never really know if
it's you that's improved or the AI that's gotten worse at some point)
and they don't really fix the fundamental problem (AI being braindead in
most places). So I tend to stick with the standard GPL 1.2 AI and just
try to drive 'around' them   ;)

Tip: use a Greger Huttu 1 (not GH2!) setup and the Lotus; that
combination is not too twitchy. Take it easy on the slower bits but try
to floor it on the fast track sections. Brake a tad before the hilltop
at Flugplatz and stay to the right going uphill to Adenauer Forst  ;)

Despite their age, they are a lot more intelligent than the AI in NR2003
(not to mention 2002 and 4).
