  Calling all PnP/SOUNDCARD/DSII/DOS guru's...

I have managed to get the newest version of ICR2 (Cart Racing)
running correctly with good mirrors etc and 28-30fps with full
graphics.  Looks awesome, runs great.  BUT!!!!!!!
They only way I can do this, get it to run properly that is, is to
boot in dos7.0 and run the batch files that do the magic.  So far so
good.  But my problem is my PnP SB 16 soundcard.  Even tho I configured
it properly with an old dos 6.2 boot disk, I can't get any of the ports
to initialize under dos so all I get is sound.  No joystick port so that
means no wheel.    My old dos 6.2 boot disk didn't agree with my new
Asus Motherboard and no longer works properly.  So my question is.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO TURN ON THE JOYSTICK PORT OF A PNP CARD WHEN
BOOTING IN DOS7.0????     That dang CTCM program runs in dos7.0 but
doesn't change the settings.  And the CTCU program that is supposed to
configure the card only works in older dos 6.2.  so I am screwed.  If I
boot win95 and then drop to dos the joystick/wheel works but then icr2
is a black screen and won't work.
I can get Renddma to run properly in Nascar2 in a dos box but ICR2
won't.  And the cartfast(indyfast.bat) WILL work but only from a dos
boot(I do have multiple configs to start) and then I'm back without a
wheel.
  Anyone????

I thought the way that Creative works their PnP is that the settings you
have the card setup for in Win95 are how they card is configured when
re-booting to DOS.  Double check and make sure the gameport portion of
the card is setup properly via Control Panel -> System Devices....

Try the following site which has a very thorough FAQ for the AWE32 and
should be similar to your card. <http://weber.u.washington.edu/~rep>.  I
think the answer is you may need Intel's "generic" PnP configuration
software.  The following is from Creative Lab's PnP FAQ:

PnP in DOS/Windows 3.1x

DOS/Windows 3.1x is not a PnP operating system. So, to configure PnP
cards, you need to install a PnP configuration driver and a PnP
   configuration utility.

Currently, a generic set of PnP configuration driver and utility that
you can find in the market for the DOS/Windows 3.1x environment is
ICM. Consisting of Intel Configuration Manager (ICM) and ISA
Configuration Utility (ICU), this driver and utility set was
developed by Intel Corporation as an interim solution to facilitate
PnP configuration when a PnP operating system is not available. It
may come pre-installed in your PC or bundled with your PnP cards.

Thanks for the info Michael.  I'll head over there tonight.  I've been
helping a guy get his brand new computer set up to run some older programs.
Can you believe a local shop here in town sold him a Win95 computer with no
dos Mouse drivers.  No CDrom drivers for dos.   BUT when "HE" dropped to dos,
his ctcm program(the exact same as I have!)
fired up all 4 parts of his soundcard(the bastard!)  Hell, I can only get the
sound to work...btw...in win95 I have the joystick port, sound, and 3d sound
enabled, but in dos only the sound starts.  Guess I'll have to do some Win95 &
pnp learning..

  Me again....

I found my problem.  I had some sort of BIOS conflict.  Since I am brand
new to the pci and pnp motherboards I really must have messed up the bios.  I
restored the default settings and got all 4 parts of the SB16 to initialize
under dos.  However I promptly lost the modem in win95.  After some
experienmenting with pnp settings and extra serial ports etc I managed to get
the soundcard and it's joystick port etc working correctly and got the modem
back too(or else I wouldn't be writting this now !)
Then I rebooted in dos and ran a whole bunch of laps at Bullrun and Elkhart
Lake with my Champ car and averaged 30 fps...It hit 30 and stayed
there...yes!  Thanks for your help...it got me headed in the right direction!

ps...boy did the replay look wierd...colors flashing and stray dust
clouds...pnp?  maybe pcp!  :)

Yup, I can believe it!  I was talking to a Tech Support guy the other
day, and he adamant that DOS was just a "shell" and not an OS!
