I've noted a few people are saying they're able to sign up and play this
game, however, when I go to sign up it asks for a CD key.

Now I know it's meant to be a closed beta, but the site is confusing in
the fact that it seems to encourage you to participate in online racing
but doesn't tell you how to get the CD key. I thought, fine.. it's a
closed beta.

However, there have been a few recent posts from people who also gave the
impression that using EA's servers was a matter of just signing up?

Is it possible to have EA send me a CD key, or will I have to wait (and
if I have to wait, what's the ETA of the PU server going public?)

You need to buy the CD. It's on the back.

Wrong CD key dude. Porche Unleashed doesn't have a CD key.

I bought the game, this is to enable the beta test on EA's servers.

When you start the game it even shows Porsche 2000 on the title screen.

But the demo key I was given to create an online account worked.. I just
need to practice a little more because I suck against human drivers ;)

  Bought in Australia where it's called 'Porsche 2000'. Back of the jewel
  case is 'Electronic Arts' and that's all. No CD key with the
  documentation and no requirement to type it in on install.
