I've spent quite a bit of time with the demo. Most of this time has been
spent playing with the various deadzone settings as well as the sensitivity.
If I had to pick one thing that bugs me most it has to be the feel of
acceleration and braking.
Though I am able to improve it somewhat by tweaking the controller settings,
I can't get away from 'binary' feeling that comes from the controls. There
isn't enough feeling of gradually increasing acceleration and braking.
You're full acceleration or braking. Its just too binary, thats the only way
I can describe it.
I have tried setting the various axis to Linear, Log, and Exponential.
Nothing brings this sim to the level of control like F1CS2k or GP3.
Also, try this: Come to a dead stop on the track. Engage first gear. Start
accelerating. I can rev the engine to 10000 RPM and still not move forward.
No brakes applied. At around 11000 or 12000, something suddenly kicks in
gear and you lurch forward.
At first I thought it was simulating a burnout and that I had reved the
engine to 10000 to fast. So I repeated the steps, gradually increasing the
revs to 10000 to avoid spinning the tires.
No difference.
My next complaint is with the graphics. Not the eye candy which is great,
but the sensation of speed. IMO, there just isn't enough of a difference in
the sense of speed visually between 100 MPH and 120 MPH, for instance. Again
this points to a binary feel to the sim. This time it shows up visually.
Once again, F1CS2K is superior.
There are a great many very respectable sim racers who have voiced strong
support for this sim, some going as far as proclaiming it as the best modern
F1 sim to date.
There are some positive aspects (eye candy, track accuracy, etc.) but
overall I'd say that F1CS2000 is a much better sim.
