F1 Racing Championship is it any good?

I'll take this on...

I've spent quite a bit of time with the demo. Most of this time has been
spent playing with the various deadzone settings as well as the sensitivity.
If I had to pick one thing that bugs me most it has to be the feel of
acceleration and braking.

Though I am able to improve it somewhat by tweaking the controller settings,
I can't get away from 'binary' feeling that comes from the controls. There
isn't enough feeling of gradually increasing acceleration and braking.
You're full acceleration or braking. Its just too binary, thats the only way
I can describe it.

I have tried setting the various axis to Linear, Log, and Exponential.
Nothing brings this sim to the level of control like F1CS2k or GP3.

Also, try this: Come to a dead stop on the track. Engage first gear. Start
accelerating. I can rev the engine to 10000 RPM and still not move forward.
No brakes applied. At around 11000 or 12000, something suddenly kicks in
gear and you lurch forward.

At first I thought it was simulating a burnout and that I had reved the
engine to 10000 to fast. So I repeated the steps, gradually increasing the
revs to 10000 to avoid spinning the tires.

No difference.

My next complaint is with the graphics. Not the eye candy which is great,
but the sensation of speed. IMO, there just isn't enough of a difference in
the sense of speed visually between 100 MPH and 120 MPH, for instance. Again
this points to a binary feel to the sim. This time it shows up visually.
Once again, F1CS2K is superior.

There are a great many very respectable sim racers who have voiced strong
support for this sim, some going as far as proclaiming it as the best modern
F1 sim to date.

There are some positive aspects (eye candy, track accuracy, etc.) but
overall I'd say that F1CS2000 is a much better sim.

The demo is different, I don't get these problems with the release version.

I find the feel is better with F1RC than either F1CS2k or GP3. F1CS2k
actually takes far too long for the engine to spin up to speed.

Turn off the automatic clutch.

It's an automatic clutch.

I find it easier to judge speed in F1RC than F1CS. As for a binary feeling,
I would say that the problem is, F1CS is far too slow in it's responses.

I would strongly disagree. For an overall F1 experience, I find F1RC is head
and shoulders above F1CS. As I've explained elsewhere in this NG, I find
that F1CS just doesn't make me feel it's simulating F1 racing cars.

There is none of that in the full release.

On the contrary, due to F1CS's lack of response, you have to floor it to get
the car moving after any corner.

Something wrong here. Are you using the automatic clutch?  Try this in
F1CS - just after the start or into the first corner on any track, try
braking to a stop. How many AI cars crash into you?  None, most likely - not
very realistic!

Cannot agree, the sensation of speed in F1RC cf. F1CS is very noticable.
F1CS seems to really drag along.

Myself included!

F1CS was by a long way my favourite modern F1 sim until F1RC came along.  I
defended it (and F12K) in this group many times, but I'm afraid compared to
F1RC it just doesn't hack it any more.  The response of the car in F1CS is
very slow, and it just doesn't feel right any more - it is too forgiving in
the way the car handles and in its approach to kerbs.  There is no real
differential in the kerbs in F1CS - they just seem flat.  Look at Imola for
example, it is essential on that track to use the right amount of kerb in
the right places, but in F1CS the kerbs all react the same.

Each to his own I guess!

Iain, I thought about this, and cannot put my finger on it exactly.

But, it definitely *felt* like an arcade game when I fisrt jumped into
the car and did my first few lap. Maybe it was the default car set-ups,
but it just didn't *feel* right?

I have to point out that I only bought F1RC about 10 days ago and have
only driven it for about a couple of hours, so I am still reserving
judgement on it, as I'm still only at the very earliest stages of
getting to know it, IYSWIM?

Although, having said that I feel I am an experienced sim racer
(please read that as *experienced* and not as *fast*!) As I've owned
pretty much all the major sim racers since my first one on a Sinclair ZX
Spectrum 48k, which was "Chequered Flag".

It usually takes me a few hours, maybe even a couple of days worth od
driving to tell whether I like a sim or not, and I'm not at that point
yet with F1RC, as I need to put in more time driving it. Trouble is I
don't have the spare time any more, as any spare time I do have I tend
to use on GPL, GP3, Superbike 2001 & Rally Masters, which are my current
favourites.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying F1RC is a bad sim, it is very good as
far as I can tell so far, but the handling did leave something to be
desired in the *feel* department, just not sure what!

Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but all these opinions of sims/games
are subjective anway......

I used the one found at www.ubisoft.de, maybe you should look for one
at http://www.ubisoft.co.uk/ (unless you speak German, of course ;)

Hell, I e-mailed them for tech support to try to get F1RC to even run at
all..."the rest is silence." Damned if I'll get a Ubisoft product again!
