Some say it spoils the purity of the sim experience. I think they also
get offended if you don't keep your pinky extended while sipping your
tea, though, too. <g>
Biggest problem with racing on-line in chase view is that you lose
your mirrors and that's pretty important info if you plan on being a
thoughtful, curteous racer against other humans. I've done chase view
on-line when I simply could not achieve an acceptable FPS at a
particular track (I'm "hardware challenged" at present) and simply
took great care to listen for the sound of another car behind me.
Considering my rather tepid driving skills at present, I just would
hold my line entering a straightaway and accelerate gradually so that
they could pass me.
If you *are* good and want to dice wheel-to-wheel then chase view with
no mirrors is going to be extremely challenging to do well.
As far as your problem goes, it sounds a bit odd. You do indeed have
3dfx selected in your graphics options? Be sure and set your mirrors
to "cars only" as this hammers the FPS. In fact, I think it's why
chase view is so much faster. Less CPU horsepower is required. Also,
add a file called Glide.Ini to your GPL directory and add the
following:
Mirror Frequency=6
The number specifies how many frames between updates to your mirrors
and should pep up your FPS when in car. From what I've heard and
experienced myself, turning on all the checkboxes only has about a 2
FPS impact, but moving the detail slider off of full left has a far
greater impact on FPS.
