I agree. I never use a dashboard

The cop chatter is useful though.

I also agree, I like the car physics.

Yeah, the cops using headon collisions to stop you is just one example
of the wonderful physics.

If you like that flying over the tarmaque nonsense, that is! ;^)

Regarding the physics in those arcade racers with this view it could
as well be a low flying helicopter game...

Just for the record. It is possible to edit the car file in the demo and get
rid of most of the push, not to mention make it way faster.

That would rock! Like WipeOut XL. The only problem is the tracks in that
were too narrow.

NOT. The original NFS was very much a sim with a realistic driving
model.

Salve Robin !!!

RS> Dashboards? I don't need no stinking dashboards :) They're pretty
RS> useless, IMO.

But they make the game much more realistic...I don't use to stuck at
the front of my car, 30 cm above the ground. Do you ?

RS> Car physics are fine to me, I hate sims.

Then you should think about changing the newsgroup - think about the
name (rec.autos.SIMULATORS)...and the physics in NFS III Demo definitely
suck ! What do you think of NFS I - get into the Porsche, head through
thos narrow streets and check out what happens when you take your foot
off the gaspedal...whoa there ! What a time...;-(

Also, man mailt sich...

Yeah... Dashboards get in the way, they don't intrude that much in real
life.

I really agree with that! ;^)

It's commonly accepted to discuss arcades AND sims (grey zone anyway!)
in this ng. Let's not be holier than the pope...

So in your car, you just filter them out of your view?
This must be some kind of eye mutation... ;^)

I've said it before, I'll say it again.  When I used to drive *fast*
on ordinary roads (competing in rallies, by the way, not being an
idiot), I was on top of the steering wheel, bolt upright to get
good leverage on the wheel.  The dash was a non-entity for me unless I
wanted to check the gauges.  All I saw was a bit of hood and the road
screaming past.  Your mind does do this filtering, and you develop
a hyper-sensitivity to what is happening *outside* the car.  I
think the TOCA "hood cam" is the most realistic***pit view
I have come across.

But then again, if you like to adopt the classic "Italian" driving
position, with arms outstretched and seat reclined, then yes, you
will see a lot more of the dash (and good luck reacting quickly
from this position).

Well take a look at an in-car camera the next time you watch an NASCAR race.
This isn't a rally race and the driver ain't over the steering wheel.  They
definately see the dash.  And when I used to play Test Drive 2 I did the
same thing you mentioned.  I payed attention to what's "outside" the car and
only noticed the dash when I wanted to check guages.  So bring the damn dash
back so I can drive on my computer like I do in my car.

What exactly does the in-car camera tell you about the driver's view? Unless the
camera is mounted on his helmet, it tells you nothing about his view. Steve's
perspective is interesting. I remember watching in-car camera shots of Richard
Petty. His chest was right up on the steering wheel. Other drivers sit more
reclined. I suspect that Richard's view of the dash differed greatly from
others.

In a way...yes. But I miss some important things then: no instruments,
no rear view mirrors, no...well, the feeling is missing somehow ;-)
