Just got N2002: what's that weird noise supposed to be?

by lane » Thu, 28 Feb 2002 12:24:32

I realy like the new engine sounds but when in a race I can hear this
"other" sound that I don't hear in testing sessions. It's like something
being scraped on the pavement. I checked the outside view and my bumper was
intact so it's not that. :-)

Another thing I have had happen is when in a crash the frame rate dropped
way down to like .5 fps. I switched res to 800x600 from 1024x768 and there
was no problem with frame rate, I then switched res to 1152x864 and it
didn't happen there either. I'm using a Radeon 8500. Anyone else have this
happen?

Kind of like a Darth Vader sound, eh?  ;o)

Which drivers are you using?  I don't have the 8500, I have the old 32
mb DDR, which I guess is now the 7200.  Anyway I was having big pauses
in NR2002 with the drivers I had (7189?) but they seem to be fixed now
that I have installed the 9009 drivers which were released recently.
That's for Win 98/ME btw, can't help you if you are using XP.

Some annoying sound anyway. I downloaded these sound file from here
http://www.discountdescramblers.com/nascar.html that is supposed to fix the
Darth Vader sound but I still hear it. I think what I'm hearing is wind
maybe.

I'm using 9009 on Win98. I saw a crash happen way up ahead of me and this
also caused a big frame rate drop, but not as bad as the ones I was in. This
seems to be some sort of intermitent problem and not consistent. After I get
this problem my PC won't soft reboot, just stalls at the shutdown screen and
I have to do a hard reset. Oh well, it's no big deal, but it just shows that
after 15 years of Papy doing sims we still can't get a perfect release out
of the gate and is annoying. On top of that I don't see what the big deal is
about this over N4 anyway. Someone said this release is like a N4.5, more
like a 4.1 IMO. <rant on>And the manual sucks because the type is too small
to read. Lots of publishers are putting out these shitty manuals with really
small typeface. They are using the small box as an excuse to cut down
priniting costs. They could easlily fit a manual 4X as thick in the box
which would mean more pages for *larger* fonts. Cheap bastards.<rant off>

exaggerated

You talking about the tire scuffing sound as you go around corners? That is
not the sound I'm talking about. I think it's maybe supposed to be wind, but
I only hear it during races and not testing sessions. It's annoying me
whatever it is.

Is that from the***pit view or another view? (just asking because
the sounds are different from internal/external view :)

Are you talking about the harmonics between the other engines around you and
yours?

You say it's only happening in the race so that's what I'm assuming you're
tlaking about.

When I'm out running around in a race in my race car, when another car gets
right beside me it seems like the air changes and then at the top of our RPM
range you get some harmonic sounds between the two engines... it's really
neat. :-)

Hear it when you lift, especially in the corners? Yup, I think that is the
'wind' sound alright. I hate it too. I have found a Wind option in one of
the INI files before and tried both 0 and 1 for the settings and I still
hear it.  Sounds like somone put a mason jar or big conch shell over you
ears for a few seconds in the corners. Darth Vader breathing is anoth good
analogy, hehe. I think they were trying to copy Heat with that and as far
as Im concerned they could have left it out...

This is a job for Mea***er. I guess with a pro sound editor you could
isolate that sound and remove it right?

I'm not really sure what it's supposed to be. I don't think it's neat though
whatever it is. Maybe it sounds different on my soundcard and speakers,
Santa Cruz with Monsoon planar speakers. These speakers are crystal clear so
any sound, good or bad, comes through. I notice on these speakers that I can
really tell if something is a good recording or not. Applying that to music
cd's more than anything.

More like crickets to me.  However I DLed the new sound
patch for external driving views (I use the rooftop cam), and
voila!  No more ***y crickets!

I think the sound in the corners is tire scrub, not wind.  Same thing in
Heat.
