Alan,
I'd personally rather see something like SOS which at least has some
historic roots and real tracks, rather than circuit racers with fantasy
tracks like NFS and such. Of course, about the time I start to get
"into" SOS, the physics model does something stupid to take me RIGHT
out of the game -- like when you turn your wheel and the car rotates in
the direction you're turning the wheel, REGARDLESS of what rate of
speed you're travelling.
You mention GP3, and, curiously enough, I found that after spending a
bit of time doing laps in SOS, I felt like it really reminded me of
*something*. I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I got fed up
with the slow frame rates (my system: AMD K6-2 350, Voodoo Banshee,
64MB RAM, GPL, Viper Racing, SCGT, and DTR all run great) and started
turning off graphics options until it got more playable . . . and then
it hit me: SOS feels a lot like GP2 with updated 3D graphics. Not
just a little, but a LOT. I know some *** GP2 fans will probably
flame me, but I had a ton of fun with GP2 -- for *** sim racing,
though, I preferred ICR2.
SOS does seem a lot like someone took the now-dated GP2 engine and
removed the aerodynamic features from the code then tweaked the physics
for a different vehicle weight and tire contact patch to create a new
game called SOS. Plus, like GP2 before it, SOS seems to be a hardware
hog -- once I turned off the mirrors and turned down some of the
graphics options, it became much more driveable . . . much like GP2 in
its time. The car still feels like it's rotating around its center
axis, rather than in a more natural way that's tied to the tire's
contact patches, but it did seem more driveable.
Neat touch: When you turn off the mirrors, instead of just blank
space, you get a "shattered/broken glass" effect where the mirror
images should be.
All in all, maybe SOS is some sort of a preview of what GP3 has in
store for us -- accurate tracks, "accessible" driving model, major
hardware hog.
Time will tell.
