I haven't had a chance to try SOS (and from what I've read, I probably
won't).
However, wrt to losing hope about Microprose producing a ***
sim...... NO CHANCE!!
I have grave worries about GP3. Its just going to be GP2 again, but
with flasher graphics.
Whats the point, if it does turn out like that.
GP2 was great when it was released, but GPL has really shown us the
way forward for 'real' racing.

And the worst part is, I feel that GPL is probably going to be the
first, and last of its kind :(.

Ohhh well.

>NFS Series has more feel then S.O.S.

I can't wait for the creative ways people will interpret the acronym
S.O.S ... unfortunately I think that's the most fun we'll have with
this game!

That is scary ... I actually prefer arcade racers myself. But I
couldn't play this demo for more than five minutes. The sound I can
live with, the choppy frame-rate I can live with (in a demo) ... but
the control is just pathetic. It doesn't feel like a car, or any other
vehicle man has evewr driven. I don't know what they heck they are
trying to emulate. A flying skateboard with jet-powered turning or
something. Then again, even TrickStyle has better control than this!

We can probably have some fun "driving" most anything for a few
minutes... even if it doesn't in any way shape or form resemble the
handling of any vehicle ever invented.   It is too damn bad that
Microprose has again fallen victim to quick-bucks greed, and they won't
even get that since sos must mean sack of sh-- and who would buy one of
those except for fertilizer?  We keep getting fooled by these greedy
companies who try to sell sorry ***like this, then refuse to engineer
and produce any really good stuff, saying things like "Oh, we tried to
market open wheel racing games in the US, and nobody would buy it...".
This is disgusting (again).  Just pray that we don't get the same
treatment with DTR, RC, CMR2, GP3, or some of the other stuff we are
impatiently waiting for.

This demo makes X-Car look pretty good, and that is scary!

Alan,

I'd personally rather see something like SOS which at least has some
historic roots and real tracks, rather than circuit racers with fantasy
tracks like NFS and such.  Of course, about the time I start to get
"into" SOS, the physics model does something stupid to take me RIGHT
out of the game -- like when you turn your wheel and the car rotates in
the direction you're turning the wheel, REGARDLESS of what rate of
speed you're travelling.

You mention GP3, and, curiously enough, I found that after spending a
bit of time doing laps in SOS, I felt like it really reminded me of
*something*.  I couldn't quite put my finger on it until I got fed up
with the slow frame rates (my system:  AMD K6-2 350, Voodoo Banshee,
64MB RAM, GPL, Viper Racing, SCGT, and DTR all run great) and started
turning off graphics options until it got more playable . . . and then
it hit me:  SOS feels a lot like GP2 with updated 3D graphics.  Not
just a little, but a LOT. I know some *** GP2 fans will probably
flame me, but I had a ton of fun with GP2 -- for *** sim racing,
though, I preferred ICR2.

SOS does seem a lot like someone took the now-dated GP2 engine and
removed the aerodynamic features from the code then tweaked the physics
for a different vehicle weight and tire contact patch to create a new
game called SOS.  Plus, like GP2 before it, SOS seems to be a hardware
hog -- once I turned off the mirrors and turned down some of the
graphics options, it became much more driveable . . . much like GP2 in
its time.  The car still feels like it's rotating around its center
axis, rather than in a more natural way that's tied to the tire's
contact patches, but it did seem more driveable.

Neat touch:  When you turn off the mirrors, instead of just blank
space, you get a "shattered/broken glass" effect where the mirror
images should be.

All in all, maybe SOS is some sort of a preview of what GP3 has in
store for us -- accurate tracks, "accessible" driving model, major
hardware hog.

Time will tell.

What on earth is this all about?

jbo..

Just got S.O.S...

I agree in that SOS is at least more intellectually appealing to me
than NFS because of its historic appeal.  If the final version is
better than the demo, then SOS might prove to be fun at least.  NFS
can't hold my attention at all -- after I've tried each track once and
tried each car, then the there's no further appeal.  With SOS, at least
the tracks, cars, and scenery represent a different historical era of
the automobile, which I can appreciate.

SOS seems like it might be a "light" historic sim, in much the same way
that LucasArt's "Battle of Britain" or "Secret Weapons Of the
Luftwaffe" were "light" air combat sims.  I really enjoyed BoB and
SWOTL, and if the final version of SOS can end up feeling as realistic
as NFS, then it might be worth owning.  Based on the demo's
shortcomings in the physics department, though, this may not be the
case.

I don't really think so. The steering input/response is WAY too poorly
done for this to have anything to do with the GP2 engine.

The worst thing about this was that they were PLEASED it wasn't 'as hard as
