Upgrading an old machine for GPL?

Hello people,

I am looking to upgrade my current machine to improve my GPL framerate.
I am on a budget, so suggesting a new machine is not an option :P

Running in 640x480, using the D3d patch, and minimal detail, I get around
26-7 fps by myself at the Glen. Is this about right?

I currently have the following:
                  AMD K6-2 500 (100 FSB)
                  192mb RAM (64mb of 100, 128mb of 133)
                  TNT2 M64 (32mb) (heavily o/ced)

I was thinking of relacing the gfx card with a GeForce2 mx200 or mx400.
Is my machine quick enough to take advantage of either of these chipsets,
or is the extra speed wasted? (I know that anything quicker is a waste,
according to what I have read).

How much of an improvement should I expect?

Cheers,
Anthony.

The GeForce2 mx200/400 should give you a few more frames in GPL. If GPL is
the only game you play on that machine then you might think about a  second
hand Voodoo3. I had a old P2 450 running a Voodoo3 (sold to a friend who
only plays GPL) and the Voodoo3 using Glide performed better than the MX400
I tried.

Upgrading an old machine for GPL?

I'm in the market for a new PC but I'm on a budget.  What's the absolute
minimum spec to run GPL satisfactorily with very decent framerate?

That doesn't sound too bad.
I was running 1024x768 (with 3D-wheels on sundays), mirror rate /2  on my old

So, IMO you should get some more performance from your existing rig.
Try: detail slider 30%
no arms
switch off gimmicks like smoke, sparks, fancy illumination,...

Pretty much a 4-500  mhz CPU with a 3DFX card such as a V3. 300mhz and
a Voodoo2 will allow you to play at 640x480 as a bare minimum, but
without any extra eye candy, and minimal other cars.

Yep, the old k6-2 500 is a poor CPU, I had a 300 mhz variety but it
wasn't too bad with an old Voodoo Banshee. If you want good FPS in
GPL, your ONLY choice is a 3DFX card, preferably a V3 or better. It
flies along in Glide, since that's what it was designed to use.

If you want to play other games, you will get a fair boost with the
MX200. I'd suggest you get the cheapest (ie 32MB mx200) as anything
above that will be wasted since your CPU is too slow.

The thing is that the Celeron was a VASTLY superior chip at the time. The
whole reason we are running Athlons and not K7's is that the K series was
HORRIBLE. The k5 was supposed to be a Pentium class chip. It was more like a
fast 486. The k6 series took a reiteration to get it to better speeds, but
was still only good for Office applications.

Hey man! I had a K6-2 450 with a 4MB Rendition (V2100) card and it ran it
fine  =)
