USB modem Vroc high pings

I got a usb 56k  modem (um9800 v.90)as i heard it was the best thing if you
are using a phone line.My DUN box is configured the same way as my old
winvoice modem but my ping rates have soared.I don't think the modem is
responding to the DUN box or modem config box as no matter what i set the
max bps to i still get about 46000bps on connection.
Any help
Joe.
ps:Some Advice. If it works don't fix it.

One quick question.  Is the advanced boxof your DUN using any strings
for your old winmodem?  Eagle Woman had a bunch of USB modem stuff
at her site, you might wanna surf over and see if she's got any faq's
for setting the USB up.  As always...make sure your drivers are
up-to-date.

I have heard that there are actually some USB Winmodems!!!!! (Found this out
while trying to see how to get my modem to work under Linux...turned out it
was supported already :)  Dirty little trick...

On a similar topic...

Are shotgun modems winmodems, and do they work well in GPL?  (And how about
if I put the Shotgun in the main PC and had the GPL PC use the main one as a
proxy to the net?)

>I have heard that there are actually some USB Winmodems!!!!!

This is true.  I have one right here, though it isn't attached to my
computer.  It's in the big box with all the wireless keyboards and mice,
drawing slates, Snappys, joystick selector switches and other ***that
isn't hitched to my computer.  I fried a USR 56K internal (lightning) and
needed a modem fast that day so I ran out and grabbed a little USB job for
about 70$.  It's a Hi-Val or something, clear green and about the size of a
short, fat harmonica.  I knew from the price that it would be a winmodem.
It works OK for general use, I never tried *** with it, though.  No
matter, I am back to an internal 'real' modem again.  One weird thing about
it, it has no speaker, so the modem sounds were pumped through my speakers.
Disconcerting.

Now..when are they going to bring cable or *DSL out to my house....
