I use a Logitech Wingman Force (ff joystick) & the hat doesn't work in gpl,
and I occasionally miss gearchanges. There's hope for the old dog yet!

I started out years ago with a Wingman Extreme & really liked the shape of
the handle & positioning of the buttons. I've had several Wingman Extreme
Digitals since, and have one that I customised to use the Y and Throttle (Z)
for some custom built pedals. (X for steering with the handle)
Ran with this configuration for a year or so and eventually bought a wheel &
pedals but it didn't feel as realistic as I hoped it would, and badly
affected my laptimes.
If you can't make it real, at least make it fast imo ;-)
So I got a USB Wingman Force & now use this with the pedals (via the modded
extreme on the gameport).
It's a great combination & iirc the Wingman Force was a highly rated
joystick in it's day, just like it's sibling the original Wingman Formula
Force wheel you guys all seem to love.
I'd like to add a gpl shifter (wife permitting) next, but I'm not sure if
it'd feel right with the joystick.
