Why WSC won't ever be released

I just checked the GPL II petition site. Only 5700 signatures. IMO, this
petition only proves one thing : the market is not so big.

As far as the development of any video game needs a lot of money, editors
are not going to spend big $$$ on such a small target.
This is why WSC won't ever find an editor.
This is why Empire tried to make WSC more arcady.
This is why Papyrus is focused on Nascar, because USA is the biggest market.
This is why I doubt that GPL II will exist.

My dream is that the sim racers community will focus on a big project : use
the talents they showed in many ways (GPL add-ons, GPL Utillities, free
simware) to make the "definitive" sim they all dream about. :-)
Ruud's racer would be a good starting, if he's OK for this. Let's imagine
this great software, with enhanced features, cars add-ons from every kind,
tracks newly created or converted from GPL add-ons...

But I'm  afraid that's only a dream. :-((

I dont think that the petition is a fair reflection on how well GPL 2 (or
WSC) would do.  There are many many racers out there who don't visit RAS and
probably havent heard of the petition site.  So maybe 4-5% of people who
would buy the game would hear about the petition and actually be bothered to
sign it.

You've posted reasons why it might not sell huge numbers

NOT reasons why it wont ever be released

Well, given that that number is of those who actually signed, I'd say
that you get at least 10x that when actually selling the game. Which
ofcourse may not be enough these days to handle the costs.

...

There's no such thing as a definitive sim, as technology keeps
changing. In the world of GPL, skipping any polygon that could be
skipped was the better way; now it's better (faster) to just pump
chunks of track to the card.

I'm ok for that; that's part of what I'm doing!
However, targeted software (simulating a specific season or league) is
probably always bound to some licensing issues. That's why I just
provide a general framework, not a F1-Racer or GT-Racer.
But from there, keeping things open and flexible is the route to
longevity. I'm sure I can get far, in time.

BTW GPL tracks can already be quite readily converted to either Racer
or the ISI suite of games.
Hopefully MP will go relatively well, also considering that bandwidths
are increasing. That's a core feature that's needed for Racer to have
real succes.

I don't think so. On the other hand, there's nothing bad about modding
an existing game; it seems they allow modding more & more.
