more important, does this eye candy cause a fps loss?

I am skeptical of the wheels.

d....can't afford to lose fps!

Me neither, but some people in the GPLEA forum did...
just try it out yourself, you can allways uninstall it...

And a beauty she is, too! Thanks, gang! The timing's perfect, as well.
It's like I've been given a reward for finally taking up manual shifting
and attempting to tame this lovely monster.

LOL!!
Well, Uncle, you should know that the smaller the monitor, the better the
frame-rate.  Those ***y great big 21" things are simply horrendous...they
chew up fps and bog down when compared to (for example) a 12" screen.
The ideal is to use the beautiful 9" Sony  monitor that came with the little
Amstrad 386 back around 1990/91.

(Seriously, the clarity and resolution on that  little jewel was
magnificent.  I used one at work and that 9" screen was brighter, clearer
and easier to read than the 14" unit on another PC that we had).

Well, Sony's "tubes" has always been excellent, I have one myself in my
17" Nokia and wouldn't trade it for anything less, it's about 3 years
old now, but beat most modern "tubes" on picture quality still, drooling
over a 19" Nokia now, but I can't really justify the expense...:-)

Well...you've been warned, squire.
Go to a 19" instead of a 17" and your will suffer a two-inches per
radiant-pixel reduction in effective frame rate.
(Our scientific lab has actually worked out that GPL, refreshing at the
optimal rate of 36fps, willl be brought to a halt on a screen 36" on the
diagonal. This is called the "Equals One" Effect or, more colloquially, the
"*** Me Days, It's Stopped!!" syndrome.)

Bruce, there was a nice one for you at the old Osborne portable CPM-machines -
you know those with 2 FD's.
I guess the monitor was about 6" <vbg>
