Why Cant NASCAR let us Race On-Line Like This?

Well the first line should tell you its a bunch of BS:

"IRL Net Race Live users will Race Against the Pros starting at Indy
500"

Its the IRL.. No such thing as Pros!!  <VBG>   LOL

"Net Race Live is the first and only online *** network that
allows gamers to compete head-to-head in actual race events."

To me, this sounds more like you are racing against data being sent to
you from the actual race, thus you are not really competing head to head
vs. other sim racers.

1) If you are racing against LIVE data.... you ARENT WATCHING THE IRL
RACE.  Smooth marketing move from a series that has 9 viewers to begin with
<G>

2) Technically, this is nothing more than glorified AI since all you
are really doing is racing against actual racing telemetry.  If you run
into one of the other racers... do they crash and leave the IRL event??
There is no interaction between the racers from what I can tell.

Not meaning to bash it, but this doesn't really sound like 'sim racing'
to me.  Its more 'interactive entertainment' than 'sim racing'.  I
personally distinguish the two.

That's exactly correct.  Tiger Woods Golf will have this capability this
year.  There are going to be cameras set up to transmit telemetry back to
the internet which will download into your game and allow you to "play"
against the REAL Pros.  I think it's a good idea, but unless you have HUGE
download capability, I don't think it'll work well with racing - you think
lag over WON is bad....
I'd like to see 'em "tape delay" the telemetry and allow it to be
downloaded complete and THEN race against it.  Sort of like "programmed AI"
that gets reprogrammed each week.  Then you could relive the 2001 Daytona
500 whenever you wanted to see if you've improved any.
However, I doubt this'll work any time soon: actual telemetry data will
react ONLY to situations that existed when the race was REALLY run - and YOU
weren't on the track when DE ran his lap 200 when he dove down onto the
apron and plowed right into the side of you.  See what I mean?  Using purely
"real" telemetry won't work unless it can be "merged" with programmed AI
that will _also_ respond to YOUR actions and have your actions reflect on
them, too.
The idea works GREAT for golf since the actions of your opponent are
totally independant of YOUR actions and vice versa.

Your absolutely right Don, and I might repeat what you said but oh well ;).
While Golfing is a good idea, since it's a passive sport where you are
competting against the course where other golfers do the same as you.  You
cannot change how Tiger will play.

While racing, what happens when you bump into people ? Or if they swerve
left, while your on the inside.  In real life there was nobody on his
inside, that's why he went there.  I simply cannot see how they can
replicate the drivers, and incorpore accurate AI.  Just think at Talladega,
it's impossible.

It will be canned, extremely.

But all that hype might only mean that they will send you the qualifying
results, so you will race against them but the only thing is that they will
have the correct grid, and that's all.  It will probably be such a thing.
Very machiavellian mind twisting if so.
