Amazing what competition can do

by Ace » Wed, 28 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I watched in despair: I was one of the first to submit to GPLRank, and I
remember being euphoric, as I was No. 75 in the world. Ha! As time went by,
more and more people displaced me, till I was well down the order... Until
Now, because I finally chipped away a few seconds of my PB at the 'Ring,
doing an 8:27~. "Right," I thought, "and I can go faster there as well...but
not tonight- there's only so many laps you can do before the brain melts".
Exporting my Ring setup I swapped the gear ratios, and revisited that old
bugbear of mine, Mexico, and managed to eke out another 1.8 seconds, after
only 10 laps or so! So, my handicap is now 5.19, whereas it was 10.13, and
damn it feels good!
I'd pretty much layed of GPL recently, but GPLRank inspired me to dig a
little deeper. It's just like one big qualifying session in a way. It's been
said before, but GPLRank is fantastic, and a big thank-you to everyone who's
worked on it!

Thanks Ace. Uwe Schuerkamp is the man who did it all.
There are now 600 people in the main list and over 800 entries
overall, so where you are now is probably a pretty good indicator of
where you really do rank world wide.
