Most tracks you don't use the brakes in NASCAR.

NASCAR 3 some ?

Got my copy of NASCAR 3 today and some questions:
(and... yes!... I did RTFM).

Trying to configure my controller (Saitek FF-wheel), N3 would not recognize
split axis. I had to configure my pedals as combined, also N3 would not
recognize buttons 5 and 6 and did recognize button 4 as "joystick 2
button2"... ???
So is split axis not supported or am I missing something?

The readme says you can add a command to choose between 3dfx and 3d3 cards
(render_device or so) into N3.ini.
This won't work. N 3 always uses the 3dfx card despite the settings in
N3.ini. Only renaming the 3dfx.dll in the windows\system directory will
force N3 to start with the primary device.???
BTW, there was a discussion about quality of 3dfx and 3d3 grafics, including
a tricky screenshot. Acccording to my experiences this may have been done
with 3dfx and 3d3 under 3dfx, which really is worse than the 3d3 grafics of
the primary card itself (and this is better than 3dfx, at least on my
system).

The frame counter shows 2 numbers, 1 in brackets, 1 without.
Is this average and actual frame rate and if yes, which is which?

Is N 3 really so arcadish?
I was somewhat disappointed about the physics. I know, it would not use
anything comparable to the GPL-engine but OTOH, the much reviled NASCAR
Revolution seemed to be more challenging...
With N 3 it is even imposible to lock the wheels when breaking hard... and
this in simulation mode WITHOUT any driving aids...
So do nascars use ABS???

Is there an adjustment switch on your pedal board for switching
between combined and seperate axis? I know there is for the TM Nascar
Pro pedals.

If your pedals are set to seperate axis, you can lock the wheels up I
believe. i tried seperate axis for my pedals once but had trouble
getting used to it after racing with them combined for many years.
One thing i did notice with pedals combined is that if you have 100%
brake and 100% gas, you wont spin the rears, but with the pedals set
to seperate, and both pressed at 100% you can spin the rears (brake
burn)
Im really not sure about the locking of wheels under braking tho.

???????????????
That's not really true, or Im missing your poor use of sarcasm.

As a top100 on the NROS, I personally say I brake at those tracks (and at
more when Im at the end of my fuel run or I want to push hard into a turn on
those D-shaped tracks) :

Bristol
Darlington
Dover
Gateway
Homestead
Indy
IRP
Memphis
Milwaukee
Martinsville
Myrtle Beach
Nashville
Nazareth
Richmond
Loudon
Phoenix
Pike's Peak
Rockingham
South Boston
Sears Point
Watkins Glen

Yeah.. most of the track you don't use the brake <vbg>

R4 FFB works fine here--remember the brake pedal is calibrated as part of
controller 2 (different from the way GPL does it).

Marc.

Remember Bill that I've retired from the NROS due to medical problems, and I
was ranked #57 when it happened.  Don't let your ego blow your head off, ya
know ;)

maybe so..but not enough to lock them up.

Most of the tracks you mentioned were not Winston Cup Tracks.

All I am saying is the braking feature that all of the GPL heads rant and rave
about is not that big a deal in a NASCAR based game. 75% of the tracks that they
run on are greater than 1 mile and the only time you use the brakes at C***te,
Michigan, Vegas, etc is in the center of the turn to take the push out of the car.
I rarely see the Winston Cup guys lock the brakes up except at road courses and
perhaps at Martinsville so I just do not see it as an issue.

But then again I did not spend 24 hours a day 7 days a week trying to get my
ranking up to 47 on TEN so what do I know?

By the way, how did you get into the top 100 in the NROS with the name Francis?

Your wrong in saying that you don't use brakes much in NASCAR, but I
know what your trying to say.  They rarely have to use the brakes hard
enough that locking them up becomes a concern.

The tracks below are WC tracks, and "most" is not appropriate here since
most of the tracks are indeed WC tracks   (11 out of 21 is a majority)  And
what would it change for them to be WC tracks or not ? They are in N3 :)

Im lost here.. we're arguing on the same point ? hehe ;-P       I said it
was not an issue also, I understand the limitation of the old Papy game
engine.

And how do you think that people in the top100 spent 24hours a day on TEN ?
I had 20000laps when this happen, I just now went over 30k, that's nothing,
in 2years it's 288laps/week, that's two leagues I run.

Francis?

My name is Fran?ois, and Im a French redneck, I guess :)

Exsqueeze me??  I can only think of 5 or 6 tracks where I wouldn't use the
brakes.  That's hardly "most".  Unless, of course, you're one of those idiots
that drive into the corners at Martinsville doing 105 mph and god help anyone
in front of you.

Sorry I was just frustrated. i get tired of everyone ragging on NASCAR sims when
I don't think that there is much wrong with them.

What I was trying to say is this. Brakes are not that big an issue in NASCAR. You
use the brakes but not enough to lock them up except on road courses and some
short tracks.

By the way, I am an idiot but I don't run into the back of people.

Correctly adjusted, split axis pedals are easily capable of locking
brakes up solid in N3. It's much easier to do at slower speeds than
at 200. Hammering the brakes at 200 usually means wrecking, whether
or not you lock up the brakes! Try using the Papyrus joystick setup
built into N3, not the one in W95/98.
