DX7a:Safe for GPL NL N3???

No problems here with DX7a or any other DX update for that matter. I've
tried it with GPL, NL, N3, SCGT, F1RS, MGPRS, CMR, DTR and TOCA2. The only
difference I notice in FF effects is a better "on center" feel in Papy sims,
I took 2 seconds off of my best time at Riverside because I was able to
drive smoother through the esses.

PII 400, 128mb, Banshee, SB Live Value, LWFF.

Because it tends to break shit, and you can't uninstall it!

It's not completly foolish. I tried installing direct X 7 & I was forced to
reformat my hard drive because my steering wheel would no longer work with
N3. Tried reinstalling, uninstalling & recalibrating but nothing would work
:(

His point is valid.  Many people have many problems with new DX versions.
Including myslef.

DX7 wreaked havoc with some USB controllers (SideWinder Pro USB, for one)
and games (MechWarrior 3, for one).

It pays to be cautions in DX land, especially since it is not uninstallable.

If MS would take away that blasted limitation that's been there for years,
then we might be a little more willing to experiment.  Not until then...

>DX7 is completely safe.

Well we know not to take your word for it. It causes major problems on
MANY people's machines, including mine.

You must work for a games quality assurance department. Because
software works well on three different computers proves nothing.

The original version of DirectX 7 is not safe on every system, which is why
Microsoft felt they needed to create an updated version.  If DirectX 7
worked correctly, there would be no need to fix it.  It is great that you
didn't have any problems with it.  However, all PC's are very diverse and it
is difficult to make software that can account for every hardware
configuration.  You shouldn't accuse people of not configuring their machine
correctly - it is Microsoft's job to make it work.  I am a MCP, and DirectX
7 screwed up my controller, period.  Any IS person also knows that any
software upgrade should be tested before implementing it on a production
machine.  I feel people posting to find out if the update is safe is
completely warranted.  Not everybody has an extra machine, the time, or the
expertise to test out a new piece of software and be able to restore their
machine to an opperational status after that test is a failure.  I have not
yet tested DX7a because I want to get a feel from others who had problems
with the original version before I waste my time with this update.

I hope you are as lucky in the future with your software.  Although I
personnally do not feel Microsoft is one of satan's minions, I do
acknowledge that their software is still programmed by humans and the last
time I checked human's aren't always perfect.  Please don't flame people who
are just trying to be careful.

But that's just my opinion.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Hi
I found my problem and it was pure coincidence that it didn't work with the
new DX7a the problem turned out to be one of my two voodoo cards making a
bad connection on the motherboard.

Maybe because DX7 had a direct input bug which wouldn't allow me to
calibrate my WF USB wheel?  Logitech was finally able to release a bug
fix on Friday after a month of complaints about the problem.

Maybe that's why.

Vic,

Go to http://www.wingmanteam.com  there is a DX7 patch for the
original calibration problem.  This may work.
