RC2000 updated demo thoughts

Hi,

Well, I tried out the updated Moon-and-Star demo of Rally
Championship 2000. Compared to the "alpha" demo I noticed only minor
changes (mostly interface and setup). The physics model is still sorely
lacking. Collisional and off-track physics are almost non-existent,
while on-track it seems very inconsistent and unnatural. From memory it
seems about as good as Need For Speed in this respect. Everything else
about the game is excellent, so if you're looking for an arcade rally
car game, then this one is it.

I just posted my thoughts on it prior to finding this one. (see New
Rally 2000 Demo above).  I have not played the previous demo nor any
current variations of Need for Speed so those I can't comment on.  The
collisional and off track effects are indeed sorely lacking. If a car
hits a tree at 100+mph the tree is taken for a ride along with the
car.. not instant stop and drive around.  The sounds also get me..
what is that sound when you are on the grass? It reminds me of a
waterfall or something.. Are not rally cars a bit higher off the
ground than normal cars and thus should be able to cruise over grass
with nearly the same speeds as they would on regular roads? Especially
the AWD versions???

I wonder when the GPL physics for Rally 2k discussion will start..
<grin>  I know they would never blend, nevermind the different
companies but this one at least has the eye candy that other games
haven't.. but now it needs something to round out the package a bit.
Better controller interface and better driving physics would go a LONG
way to improve this game.  Again, I look very forward to the next
updates.

RC2000 updated demo thoughts

I've combined some Rexven quotes, because they are spot on: these 3 things
are EXACTLY my thoughts and ruin the game completely.  And because this is
the updated demo, I have no hopes left for the final game.

Indeed very awfull. In Nascar 3 or even NFS there is a certain lag when you
turn the wheel, which gives and idea of weight (to put it simple).  This
sensitive control makes me feel I'm moving pretty pictures around the
screen, not driving a rally car. You can't really steer the car, you only
make adjustments, aim in a certain direction, hoping you'll stay on the
road. It's the very old 'moving-the-road-instead-of-the-car' feeling...

And it's not only the sounds themselves, it's also the way they are
programmed: I bumped into a tree (and came to a very sudden unrealistic
halt). As soon as I hit the gas, even a little, the 'grass-wav' was played
at full volume! So there I was, standing still, and mixing my own ***
dance hit with the rhytmic movement of my gas pedal. Yikes! Also when you
go from grass to tarmac or something, the sound changes too abrupt. And the
'sound' of the surface is MUCH more apparent than that of the car. After a
few minutes it really gets on my nerves.

After trying it a few times I just couldn't get myslef to drive the long
old demo once more. It was all too irritating. This new demo is more than
enough too. I think (I know) I'll pass this one. Never mind the HIGHLY
irritating box-talk about 'never seen before features' (none of which are
new at all!) Europress is great at creating a hype (just as they did with
the previous crappy rally game), not at making games.

Yak.

:-(

C'mon Colin McRae Rally 2!!!
