>      "..discouraging honest programmers..."  Why would an honest
>programmer be discouraged by someone complaining about having to
>pay for a utility?

Because honest programmer's usually get paid for an honest day's work,
that's why.

In an extremely limited way. Most of the racing utilities I want just
aren't available at all. Like track editors, or new tracks for
example. Why aren't they available? Well, probably because they are
too complex and too much work to implement as an unpaid hobby. And
given the hostile reaction around here to anything beyond hobby-scope,
I can't blame programmers for avoiding these larger projects.

Thats one it is, and someone choosing to charge for a particular
utility does not change that in any way, shape or form.

No they won't - the only utilities that will get created are simple,
low-end ones that people can afford to do as hobbyists.

: Uhhh, not to start a political debate or anything, but I believe any
: fan of motor racing would have problems living in a completely
: non-capitalist world.  If I am not mistaken, the vast majority of the
: motor racing series' that people actually care about are funded with
: the results of capitalist "greed".  At least that has been my
: observation here in the US.  And whenever I watch F1, Winston Cup,
: CART, IRL, Touring Cars, etc., they all seem to have one thing in
: common -- advertising!  That's what pays the bills.  I haven't heard,
: but is Fidel Castro sponsoring a Winston Cup car next season?

: So whether you agree or disagree with capitalism, if you enjoy the
: top levels of motor racing, you are probably benefitting from its
: spoils.

Right, that is true.  But, there are alot of talented drivers out there
that no one ever sees unless they go to their home town tracks.  These
guys work a regular job and spend their own hard earned money to buy a
beater and fix it and go racing on the the weekend with it.  They don't
even expect to get enough money to pay for the night's overhead when they
win.  It's all for the love of the sport.  Turn back the clock and see
where NASCAR came from.  The same thing.  Of course the "mill" has
ground out some great drivers.  Dave Marcis is holding on by the
shoelaces of his wing-tips.  That and alot of charity from some of the
well financed teams.  He is the last of a breed.  Even Alan Kulwicki
almost faded from the scene due to lack of funds.  That is sad.  In a
very microscopic way, I think that is what is "bothering" some people
about what they perceive is happening here.  Of course there are as many
sides to this issue as their are readers and posters in r.a.s.  Some are
just cheap, some are just plain idiots, some are idealists, and some
just don't give a damn and wish we would shut up!

: Just my two cents worth . . .

Have we collected enough pennies yet to buy the converter for the
newsgroup? ;-)  If not, throw my $0.02 into the pot!

Thank You !

Yeah I think so.  The Banana Republic Yugo <g>

Makes me wonder, all the whining I hear in RAS.  Did Gerhard leave
because of these people <never satisfied always wanting more more more
more more>.

That's my 2 cents.
