GPL: Altering volume of opponents cars?

Is it possible to lower the volume of the opponent's engines while keeping
the sounds of my vehicle high? I am having problems hearing what my car is
'doing' when other vehicles are around.
If I have missed something real simple please be easy on me... :)

But I believe that's realistic. At least in a touring car you have to watch the
tachometer on the start grid because it's not possible to hear the sound on your
own engine above the surrounding roar of everyone else's engines.

Yes it is indeed possible, in fact I did this a few weeks after GPL
released  and liked it so much that I left it like that.

What you do is get one of the utilities that unpacks the .dat files, I used:
http://www.theuspits.com/filez/Trpckv10.zip

Then you use that to unpack the sound .dat file in your \Sierra\Gpl\Sound
directory, this will unpack all the different wav files used in the game,
then I just used a wave file editor (like ones that come with your soundcard
or another) to reduce the volume of all the engine sounds to like 80% of
the original. Then you repack the wave files back into the sound.dat for
use by the game.

The result is that on your own car you can now hear the tire squeal as the
brakes start to lock up much better etc. and the real benefit is when you
are racing wheel to wheel with someone their engine noise no longer covers
up the tire squeal of your brakes locking when fighting for a corner.

Hope it helps.

Seeyas on the track.

Heh and what a great race it was, you are one fast Ferrari drive Jason :-)

Really, lowering the engine noises has done wonders to my ability to
hold people off for position or to sit behind them trying to force errors,
I trail brake like crazy and losing the audio feedback of when I'm braking
too hard just because I am close to the other car, used to lead to many
brake lockups and going off in the corner under pressure.

This is not to say that I am great at wheel to wheel battles :-)
I am still a rookie and make frustrating rookie mistakes, just that I
can now hold my own when someone fills my mirrors most of the time, and that
most of my mistakes are due to brain fade than not hearing tire squeal.

Sound of the tire squeal in GPL is one of the most important environment
clues that we have to rely on in sim racing versus real life racing,
you don't want it to be obliterated by engine sounds of the other cars
no matter how great the sound of that Ferrari engine.

Seeyas on the track. (I hope we can have another great race soon Jason)
