Out of interest, what sort of lap times are you lot getting at the 'Ring? As
the Apex Hot Lap charts still aren't up, this is a valid question!

Still, thought I'd get the ball rolling.. best so far 8:17.03; default setup
for the Lotus except with taller gears and 5gallons fuel...

Come on then, how's everyone else doing? :)

Nurburgring Best Lap times....????

by doktor » Sun, 11 Oct 1998 04:00:00

9:15.90 in the Ferrari.. spun 3 times - right near the end after the 2nd
carussel... DAMN!!

I tried the Lotus a couple of times.. spun at least 7 or 8 times, and did a
9:34.xx !! But I just can't keep the damn thing on the road! (Ferrari is
tough enough).

I would have to say that I am MOST COMFORTABLE racing at the 'Ring.. I've
got all the corners down, know where to brake, shift, turn in, etc.. it's
just a matter of keeping the car on the road by not making mistakes.

I've got the Aremberg through Adenaeur-Forst section nailed!! Can do it
faster than Doug Arnao is the included replays.. I love it!

.. but it doesn't help that my top speed on the Antoniusbuche is only 181
miles an hour.. did 194 I think in the Lotus..

Anyone else care to post their Ferrari top speeds at the 'Ring?
.. what about at Monza.. having setup problems there too..

Thanks,

Doug can do it faster than he did it in the replay - the tricky part
is doing that and putting it together with the rest of the lap - going
total commitment for 8-9 minutes is nigh impossible without a slip-up,
and that's usually costly at the Ring :-)

I'm not sure about top speed but I've done 8:28 in the Ferrari at the
Ring. I'm like you - I know the Lotus is faster but I can't put a lap
together with the twitchy swine :-)

Cheers!

Twitchy is the word! Although when you get really dialled in, nothing
handles better than the Lotus...
If it were possible to be fully committed the full lap, surely a sub 8min is
completely feasible... but by the time I get to the Kurussel without losing
it, my heart is beating so hard that I usually bottle the last part of the
lap! To cross the start finish line is bliss! Now time for an even quicker
lap, I think, and then...
...crash at the first corner :( Only another 9min warm up lap and I can try
again...

Come on John, any idea what Doug's absolute best time is? I've heard of a
8:16 (as mentioned by Alison). Has he bettered that? Has ANYONE bettered
that? If so, wheres the replay?!!

Yours totally obsessed with the ***y Nordschleife (mainly after driving
(and losing it) round the real thing),

Berger once described himself as driving one corner at 95% commitment,
the next lap at 105% commitment, and so on - those fluctuations will
throw you off the road. Senna he described as being at 99% commitment
every time on every lap.

That aspect of knowing where your limits are is extremely important,
and speed comes from being able to realise that and take the car as
close to it as you are comfortable without throwing the car off the
road. That, IMO, is the difference between Villeneuve and Schumacher -
I think both are ultimately as quick as each other, but Schumi can
consistently remain closer to his limit without error than Villeneuve
can.

Hotlapping in a sim is a false demonstration of speed since the only
penalty for crossing the limit is the time to restart the lap.
Nevertheless, online or in a race the one who can most closely
approach his limit will generally be the winner.

Cheers!
John

PS - The best I've seen from Doug is an 8:16, but what really
impressed me was that the previous couple of laps were 8:17s. That's
some nice consistency!

The 8:16.04 is the best "clean" lap I've got (it's on Alisons
site).............I've got an 8:15.8x saved that's real messy with, I'm
guessing,  about 2-3 seconds worth of off track
excursions................OTOH, I hear Mr Mansell is in the 8:14's though, and
if anyone can go sub 8 minutes , it'll be him :)
