Perhaps he is having a bad spell? Or has had one recently?

I know he is a bit edgy on this subject, after all he is 83, you know. And the
elder folks are rather hung up with the virtues of the good old imperial days,
where correct spelling was a sign of class... hehehe!

Anyway, your spelling was to say it the least, adequate, I full understood
your original post... :-)

Hehe, Bruce, you certainly know how to annoy people, don't you?

Well I think you are struggeling an impossible fight against sloppy spelling,
the english language is on the verge of becoming changed as a matter of course,
the way words are written comes from the dark age, we might adjust the spelling
somewhat to make it a bit easier for us non-nativ english writers, yes?

Those whose first language is English should be taught to use it correctly.
Just as those whose first language is Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, Albanian
or even Norwegian should be taught to use their native language correctly.

I am not advocating that English should become a universal language and nor
am I suggesting that those whose mother tongue is other than English should
be expected to master its bastardised spelling and grammar.

However, as an employer, I can assure you of one thing:-  any application
that I receive in which the spelling is pathetically incorrect is responded
to with a "thanks but no thanks."  I can also state without fear of
contradiction that this stance is being taken by more and more employers
these days who are sick and tired of our education systems turning out
illiterates.

Correct spelling has never been "a sign of class" here Asgeir.
A sign of a proper education....sure.  But in Australia, never a sign of
"class".

To value correct spelling and grammar in a Usenet post as much as in
a job application is slightly silly, isn't it?

No, because it should become a habit, irrespective of what medium one is
using.

I'm sure that you would wash your hands after defecating irrespective of
whether you did so in a public toilet or in your own bathroom.

Well, to stay in the context of your comparison:

I don't give a shit about perfect spelling of Usenet posts... ;^)

Probably because, like most of the readers and writers of the 1990s, you
couldn't spell without the use of an on-line spell check utility and
wouldn't have the faintest idea of how to use a dictionary.

Nonsense, IMO.  I think it should be fairly old news now that the Internet
is breaking down all sorts of communicative models.  I receive email all the
time from academics (including the director of our college writing program)
that, if graded by your standards, would classify them as mental
incompetents, as the non-hand-washing crowd.  I assure you that, for the
most part, they just realize that the e-world's models of grammar usage,
spelling, etc., are rather loose and flexible.  (Sort of like verbal
communication.)

If that gets your panties in a wad, then so be it--but don't pontificate (if
I can use that word as a verb) that the universe "should" conform to your
rather (again, IMO) overly regimented rules of discourse.  Is there a hidden
class thing going on here?

And your correlation of "bad" grammar to bodily hygiene is, to say the
least, a bit of a stretch.

You really seem hung up about this whole issue.  There is help available.
