GPL v1.1 and NT4 SP5 trouble

by Hena Hakkane » Sat, 25 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a dedicated GPL server on an NT4 SP5 box, but I'm
having peculiar problems.
Here's what I did:

Installed GPL v1.0 full install
Selected software renderer during setup
Rebooted
Installed v1.1 patch
Tried to run the game

Here's the problem: Papyrus Window gives two error message windows, one
saying it cannot locate glide2x.dll and the other saying it cannot locate
redline.dll, and game never starts. I checked app.ini and it says the last
renderer is indeed softdll.dll. What gives? Why does GPL need those dll's if
I've configured it t use sw renderer?

Machine specs:
Dual P2/300
256MB
Diamond Fire GL 4000 (that's why I'm using software renderer :))
FastEthernet PCI card

Any ideas?

Hena,
Maybe one solution is to download and try the Opengl beta2 patch
from http://www.papy.com
and change the app.ini to rastogl.dll.
I have GPL-dedicated running on NT40 SP5 with no problems, check
out the G.Shift server in          GSB. If u need more input, send me an
email (remove the "nospam")

Remco,

GPL v1.1 and NT4 SP5 trouble

Hmmm.  gpl.exe doesn't reference those .dll's, but our 3Dfx and
Rendition .dll's do.
GPL will try to load the rasterizer that is specified in app.ini.  If
it can't load it for some reason, it will try any other rasterizer
.dll's it sees in its home directory.  It probably can't load the
softdll.dll for some reason.  Here are some things to try:

1) Make sure you do not have fullScreen=0 set in the [Rasterizer]
section of core.ini.  Our software rasterizer will only run in full
screen mode, and will fail to load if you specify that you don't want
to use it.

2) Try setting your desktop to a higher resolution than 640x480, and
set its bit depth to 16 bits.

3) I vaguely recall something with Win98 (might also apply to NT4/SP5?)
under User Profiles about sharing the same desktop settings, or some
such.  When it's set one way, the game can't change desktop
resolutions.  Maybe look for something like this and diddle with it a
bit.
