DAYTONA a few words, especially to ARobe@aol

All,

Over the past couple of days there has been a frenzy over this Daytona
Patch that has 'appeared' on the Internet.

First of all I'd like to set some things straight.

As far as I know, its not my patch as I never released it or uploaded
it to and Internet server unecrypted.

During the Beta test version I carefully vetted the testers and
explained the reasons why they must not pass the track around.

It IS possible that one of the Beta testers in sheer frustration over
the Daytona issue has posted one of the early Beta versions of the
patch.

However, I would be grateful if someone could post a PCX grab from the
game showing the added wall writing and new grandstand that supposedly
is in the game. This way I can be sure in my own mind that its not my
work. I suspect is is not as the file name is called DAYTONAB.ZIP and
seems to be a 'hacked' patch.

Secondly, I would like to express my congratulations to the creator of
the track for managing to crack the file format, but also to express
my frustration at the damage they may well be doing.

In my own small way as the person who got the whole Daytona debate to
a new level, I have had some fairly constructive talks with Andrew
Gurtis at Daytona and have tried to pitch our case for Daytona very
strongly.

Daytona are not the bad guys in this sordid episode, but they are
trying to protect their rights.

After the discussions I had with them, I withdrew my Daytona patch
because I believed that it may of actually jepordised any
consideration that Daytona had of letting Papyrus have the license.

However, these new patches are again jepordising the chance of the
license being granted and the 'we don't care -***you Daytona'
attitude is making things worse than I ever did.

I also despair that we are getting to the stage where we will soon be
flooded with many patches for one thing or another and the overall
quality of these sims will be jepordised and that new bugs will be
introduced.

It is possible that an inexperienced user could render a track useless
by using a util incorrectly.

Gerhard and I worked hard to make sure that what we released was worth
releasing and took car to make sure it enhanced, not degraded, the
original.

Lastly, all I ask is that people think very hard before downloading
and Daytona patches.

Do you really want to jepordise the chance of us getting an official
Daytona track or any others for that fact, just so you can get a poor
substitute made up from leftovers from other tracks?

I'm about to e-mail Andrew Gurtis and try to convince him that I
haven't released my patch and not to sue my arse to high hell over it.

If it does get serious then I may have to seriously consider whether
or not I want to continue in the sim racing world adn whether or not
to keep The Pits going.

At The Pits, we're on your side and we're trying to make things
better. Don't***it up for us.

I don't mind you having our utils on your pages, but try to refrain
from lifting the HTML straight from The Pits.

If you are going to scream and shout about your homepage and least
make sure its your own.

Thanks for listening.

Jed,

I'm not sure if it was the same one but about 6 months ago , I
downloaded a "Daytona" track called   DAYTONAB.ZIP and it was
terrible.  I think it came from alt.binaries.simulators.autos and the
guy who  "wrote" it claimed it was an untested Beta.  I kept it for
about 5 minutes.  It still had Taladega on the walls and ireally think
the only thing changed was the name and the distance was 2.5 miles
instead of 2.66 but it was not any different than the original.  It
sounds like thats the same one going around again.
Hope this eases your conscience a little.

...and the response to that was...

...or how much Jed stands to lose personally as well as financially.
He has contributed much to the racing sim community with a lot of hard
work and effort to bring utilities and files to the racing public.

I think if we put in the time and effort to create a web site similar
to Jed's, we'd realize how much is at stake.  We probably only know
about 10% of the situation, conversations, and people involved, so I
don't know how anyone could respond with the criticism witnessed in
this thread without sounding totally clueless.

Hiya m8

I know it wasn't your patch. I was told by the bloke Doc Speed(I know his
real name) that it was legal and that I can distrubite it freely so I did.
I only put a link to his page on my page.  I didn't even download the
thing as I can't stand nascar!!!!

Sorry for all the hassle.

The answers are there.  You just have to know where to look...
Check out my web page for all your links to F1GP,Indycar,ICR2,Nascar and

You know, things might not be the most ethical or legally binding here
in this newsgroup, but regardless of cracked postings of Talledega as
Daytona on Arobe????'s web page (URL or not), meaningful debate is so
much more enjoyable to spend my dial-up dollars on than to read this
kind of unintelligent, thought-less provoking response.

If you've got something to say, at least say it with some brains and
generate some real responses from the people who frequent this
newsgroup.  I should know, just look at the ICR2 patch thread from a
couple of weeks ago. ;o)

You get what you deserve, but why go asking for it?  What does it
prove?  I'll just filter you out with my newsreader and then, at
least, I'll feel better about reading some real posts.

Jed,
Thank you for doing what you can with daytona people on or behalf, Is
there anything we can do to help?
I would love to be able to run Daytona as well as Brickyard but only
if they are legit and realistic.
Again, on behalf of those of us who are serious about our sim racing
Thank you.
