Not quite like that. Eouch!
I've been to St. Croix, though, in a 757 and the runway didn't
feel much bigger. When we flew out we were part of a rush of
people leaving the islands because of Hurricane Lenny. I
remembered the runway as being quite short anyway, so it didn't
surprise me much when the captain hit the end, locked the brakes
and proceeded to wind up the engines. What *DID* surprise me
was when he them back down. After a few moments of silence the
captain came over the intercom and said we'd have to wait a bit
as we were too heavy and couldn't take off. I figured a few
people would have to get off. Well, not two minutes later he
announced that the problem was solved and started racing the
engines again. Keep in mind that this is not only a short
runway, but in a driving rain with brisk cross winds because of
the approaching hurricane. AND NOT A SOUL HAD TOUCHED THE
AIRPLANE TO TAKE ANYTHING OFF! Color me scared shitless when he
released the brakes. I'd have sworn I saw water under the
airplane before the wheels left the ground.

Keep in mind that this is not only a short
So they sat there for a couple of minutes and burned off some fuel. That
might have been jusst enough...you did get airborne and live right???

A lot of them are. The higher up ones are generally real. Easy ways to
spot....
1. Lack of shadow
2. Landing gear not quite down despite altitude of less than 50 feet
3. Noone looking at the sky despite 767 100 feet above them

Yup. Everything arrived more-or-less in one piece. Except the
flight attendants. We hit some pretty wicked turbulence during
the drink service that knocked down a few of the attendants and
got some cranberry juice on a few unfortunate passengers. Come
to think of it, we overflew the Bermuda Triangle for part of the
flight. Coincidence? :)

There are nice documentaries on the Discovery channel about frozen CO2
banks in the ocean, which, when surfacing, generate heaps of gases and
can even have a plane flying over such a phenomenon explode in
mid-air. Interesting stuff. Ofcourse the Bermuda Polyg... eh Triangle
region seems to have lots of those banks in its ocean floor.
All of this ofcourse since you made it. :)
