If money is the problem then my advise will be to wait until GP2 is
released, see how you can play the game in your system and how it
plays in other systems (like P120) and only then upgrade your
computer.
You should know then what is the optimum price/performance ratio for
playing GP2 (CPU and video board) and maybe by then the Pentium price
drop a little, especially the Pentium 120 (which is arround $350 right
now).
BTW, you can then overclock a P120 to 133Mhz and then have a 60 to 66
MHz memory bus increase (that is very important) and arround 10.6 %
increase in power for a null price.
Ive overclocked mine to 133MHz and works fine (so far!), If I get
some 2-3 frames/s extra with that (in SVGA) it will be worth it. Ah
.. dont forget, if you want to overclock make sure your board comes
with 60ns simms (not 70ns, although Ive heard you can do it also) or
EDO ram, and have a good cooling mechanism for the CPU.
Ive heard about more people who have overclock their CPU but the
system was unstable or didnt hang around much time so they had to put
it back to the original frequency. I havent heard anyone that has
damaged the system so far (thats why Ive tried it !!). Read the
comp.sys.ibm.pc.chips group to know more!
Obs: Overcloking your CPU is at your own risk !!! I am only telling
about what I know and about my own experience. (Sysinfo CPU benchmark:
it went from 380.3 (at 120MHz) to 420.6 (at 133 MHz (or is it 132MHz
?) and F1GP ocupancy rate is lower now).
P.S. - New video boards will come soon also. And the old ones will
get cheaper. Its good to have power but dont rush it until you need
it.
GP greetings,
Miguel
