I have a 2x, and while loading is a little slow it doesn't seem to
affect the game play at all.  4x are around $50 anymore - 1/3 of what
I (Santa, actually) paid for for a 2x long ago and far away.  8x are
around $100.

I'm just about to buy a CD rom drive for my PC so that I can get GP2. What
affect does speed have on the games performance, I can get 2x drive for
next to nothing or I can dig deeper and get a 8x drive.

Any comments and recommendations welcome.

program said it needed  300 bit transfer and mine is only 240. It still
works though.     RB

Dig deep!

While the game is in 'menu' mode, it constantly plays music off the CD in
the background. This isn't a problem if your drive is up to it, mine
isn't and I hate it. I have a Creative 4x drive and the game locks up for
15 secs at a time while it loads the music.

I also have a 4x CDROM but it never locks up during menus to load music.
And, yes, I do have the music turned on.
I also use the minimum install, which means that the CD is frequently used.

Why don't you use:

C:\GP2>gp2 nomusic

and save the wait?

Anyway, my 4x Toshiba only takes 2 or 3 seconds to start playing the
tunes on my P100.

a cdrom doesnt affect realtime games like simulations in any way. a cdrom is
just a medium like a harddrive for uploading bits to the mem. and even then,
installations of sims put all their needed bits to the harddrive, and will use
the cdrom just for original copy check.

adventures use much memory and use alot of stored info for pictures and sounds.
there it is fine to have a fast cdrom.
if u are in sims, a quad is fine (u get them for 75-100$ today). if u like
adventures, ull be happy with a 6speed or octet.

My Sony 2x drive has no noticable delays.  You might want to check
your settings for MSCDEX buffer size.

For what its worth - my P133 with an old CR563B DOUBLE speed CDROM
*** off a SB16 has not problems at all with the sound....

The easiest way to solve this problem is to turn the music off by
reducing its volume to zero.
GP2 is clever enough to stop loading the sound data when it would have to
play it with no volume :-)
