GPL Multiplayer has left the building???

by Thomas Soerense » Sat, 18 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi all

I have encountered a problem I find truly weird.

I was in WinVROC chatting and suddenly got the urge to try and race
online. I got WinVROC to show my version of GPL (1.2.0.1.) by showing
WinVROC my GPL folder.

Then I saw all the races - even some that was not red. And I got some
ok pings (around 300-350). I double clicked a race at Monza I would
definately have lost - probably by spinning in Lesmos 1 - and it
started GPL up - giving me the "splash screen" showing I have 1.2.0.1.
then it showed me the "choose race type" screen where we can chose
between practice, single race, WC and multiplayer for 5/8 of a sec.
then GPL was shut down and I was back in WinVROC. I noticed that GPL
had (correctly) chosen multiplayer.

I tried a few times - same result.

Then I rebooted my PC - fired up GPL and tried to go into the
multiplayer screen - GPL was shut down. I tried once more for the sake
of Bill Gates - same result. I tried getting into a practise session -
no problem. I tried getting into a singel race - no problem.

To me it seems like I have lost the multiplayer part of GPL - that is
not possible is it?

Can anybody help me?????????????

My system scepc are:
Pentium II 450 mHz
256 MB Ram
3dfx Voodoo 3 3000
Force RS wheel + shifter
a core.ini.sample that has been remaned to core.ini to enable FF
I think I have the lates drivers for everything

<snip>

I've got almost exactly the same problem - I get plenty of reasonable
(by DUN standards) pings of 300-ish. I click on one, GPL launches OK,
the Multiplayer screen comes up, the "connecting" thing comes up.
Then I either get a "connection timed out", or, occasionally, I get
as far as the "Welcome!", it goes onto the connection screen (the one
where "CHAT" flashes in red), and *then* it dumps me back in VROC. I
did once get into the car - for under a second, then it dumped me
again.

I get this even with an utterly basic 28k connection with no error
correction or compression, and all the settings (including those in
the core.ini file) as recommended in Alison's Online FAQ. I've tried
a WinModem, a normal external one, and a USB one. Same every time.

I can only surmise that for some reason the connection is not stable.
I don't know if Danish telephone companies are as bad as BT (they
can't be, surely...), but some people over here have reported success
if they ask BT to "increase the line gain" (???). And yes, I've tried
that, and I still get the errors. I'm going to sulk now...

Hello,

Did you recently install an anti-virus scanner or another program running
in background?
In my case, that was the reason why I could not connect to an on-line
race.
When I had the anti-virus software disabled, everything worked without
any problems.

<snip>

I thought of that one. I've got nothing that is in any way non-
essential runnning at all. Makes no difference :-(

I'm fairly sure the fault lies with BT, but they don't guarantee phone
lines for non-voice use, so I'm a bit stuck (there's no prospect of
getting cable here in the near future).
