The Superbike lap record was made on the resurfaced track. In pre season testing
the GP500's are more than 1.5 seconds faster than the best Superbike times
around the island. Just to be pendantic!

As for a Formula 1 around the Isalnd, I would love to see that!

Could you imagine the retired old fogies (including my parents who are within
shouting distance of the track) putting up with F1 noise? It was bas enough
this weekend wioth the V8 Supercars.

The fours will become the GP class. All of the manufacturers are pushing it.
500cc two strokes bear no resemblance to what sell on the street.

It would take some of the skilll out of it I reckon. But they do reckon they are
getting 250HP out of some 750 four stroke test beds. Imagine am unrestricted
1000ccc four!

> Perhaps I should have said "very loosely based on..." :-)  Some people must
> be buying the expensive machinery or they would not be making them!

> Most recent news on 4 strokes in the GP's is (quoting from Australian
> Motorcycle News, May 14-27 1999) as follows:

> - Noise limit of 115 to 120 dB (rather than the no noise limit that was
> first proposed - that would have been real nice!)
> - Less than 1000cc in capacity, but the Grand Prix Manufacturers'
> Association Secretary, Mr. Tsubouchi, would not confirm rumours of a 750cc
> being set in place.
> - Fuel consumption limits being introduced. 2 strokes revert to the former
> 32lt limit (currently free), 4 strokes initially a 24lt limit dropping back
> to 22lt after 3 years.
> - Oval pistons will not be counted as two cylinders.
> - Weight limits for the bikes: 135kg minimum three cylinders, 145kg for four
> cylinders and 155kg for six or more cylinders.

> No mention of when this may happen, so who knows if it will or not.

| P.S. The GP500 class will most likely be replaced by a GP750 4 stroke
class in the
| next year or so. The only trouble is they are getting over 250HP out of
the test
| 750's!

Are you sure about this? That's 333 horsepower/liter, an awful lot for a
normally aspirated four-stroke.......

No secret anymore - They had it on demo yesterday at E3 in LA.

All the tracks, riders and teams of the 1998 GP500 season.

And it DID look nice. Even a confirmed auto racer like me might go for this one.

Thats what  people I was talking to at the World Superbikes at Phillip Island
were saying.
SInce they are getting close to 200HP with the 500cc two strokes I can quite
believe it. 250HP is way too much. Nobody said if 250HP was usable at the
back wheel or just on a workbench.

I received confirmation of the "launch" soon after I posted the message.

It does look nice doesn't it!

Was their much interest in the game at E3? GP 500 racing is hugely popular in Europe
so I think the game will generate a lot of interest there. In Australia the product
will sell due to Doohan!
