the continuing freeze-up battle...

Lads, thanks for all the help, but I'm still getting freezes in certain
games. My last suggestion is D3D, but if anyone has any ideas, I'm Dumbo
(all ears).
These work....GPL, N3, NL, Monaco, SCGT, Powerslide, DTR, CPR
These don't...GP500, EA SBK world champ, Toca 2, Mcrae.

I say they don't work, but they do, however only for a short while...I've
got the very latest drivers for EVERYTHING save the newest beta for Voodoo3,
and my BIOS might be a bit old. I tried the suggestion about shared .vxd
files, no good.
All I'm left with is a motherboard or D3D thing, but to be honest I haven't
got a clue...

What have these games got in common with each other, yet apart from the
other set? Any idea??????

Well... A good motherboard can really make alot of a difference... When
people have problems they most often post the specs of their CPU, Vid and
soundcard etc. But not what motherboard they are running... Which one do you
have? Motherboard chipset is a very important part of the pc...

As much of a pain in the ass that it is, sounds to me like a Win98 fresh
install is in order. I generally do every 2-3 months anyway because i try so
much ***s/w. After it's reinstalled and you have the latest drivers
installed then add each one of the "problem" sims at a time testing each
before moving on.  Sounds kinda like setup testing huh <g>.  If you are
still having problems then you likely have bad hardware.  MB/CPU/Mem/device.
Be sure to keep system cool.

Best of luck!

Mitch

A Windows re-install is probably NOT required -- all you're doing is
using a sledgehammer approach to fix something that can probably be
dealt with surgically.

This is probably a VXD problem in your Windows operating system.  I had
similar problems and I found a great site that has a VXD fix batch file
and instructions -- here's the scoop:

What are .VXD's and why does Windows 98 need a fix?

Windows 95 and 98 both use a compression technique to theoretically
speed up Windows load time, which combines many system VXD's into one
monolithic VXD file named VMM32.VXD. However, theory and the real world
have been proven not to work 100% of the time.

The results for many users of Windows 98 are:

System instability
BSOD's (Blue Screen Of Death)
Mouse lockups
Problems during Shut Down.
Screen suddenly freezes, ALT+CTRL+DEL will not recover.
If YOU have experienced these problems, this fix alone may eliminate
them completely!!

.VXD's are Virtual eXtended Device drivers, and Windows uses them to
control the function of such things as:

Your mouse.
The hardware you modem uses. (Comm Port)
Your Video Display Adaptor (Video Card)
And others

Visit their site for a "fix":

http://www.racesimcentral.net/~revolutn/win98_vxd_fix.htm

Or go to their FAQ file for more info:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/~revolutn/vxdfaq.htm

I didn't use their batch file, but I did read over the FAQ, and then I
extracted the "magic 7" VXD files manually, and it really helped my
lockup problems.  I HIGHLY recommend this if you're having lockups --
think of it as a system "tuneup."

The user has tried your suggestion and it didnt work John (but so far has
worked great on a clients machine).  It looks as though hes exhausted nearly
all of his options.   By reinstalling windows and testing in a methodical
approach he can determine if in fact he has a hardware issue.  He may have
installed some ***s/w (like DTR j/k <g>) and it overwrote a .dll with an
older version or something to this effect.  The only way to know for sure is
to use Win98's system file checker which would take longer than a clean
Win98 reinstall.
