Speeding up frame rate/Nascar

by Doug Sogol » Sun, 07 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Hello, all: I'm running Nascar in SVGA and I think the frame rate
could be better (slightly choppy), even with everything turned off.
I'm using the following hardware:
#9 GXE64 w/1MB DRAM
16MB Ram
486-66
...and the game is loaded to disk. Can anyone tell me what I need to
get the best results?
Appreciate the help

Well I'm running P90, Diamond 64 2mb Vram, and 24mg and I can run
everything but road texture. I don't know, but I think I should have
everything that I should need to run a two year old game! (wait until GP2
min. requirements P90 16mg

Well...the best thing you can is not load anything..Just
Device=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS in your config. Since it has a DOS extender you
don't need EMM386, smartdrv, mouse(no mouse support), CD rom(on disk,
good move) and your autoexec can be clean too.  It really doesn't need
much.

Secondly...unfortunately...2 problems..your video card only has 1 meg
ram and a 486DX266 in the low side for performance.  Making the changes
to your config/autoexec should help..but not nearly as much as new card
and CPU..that's the way it is.

The good news is, that NCR2 has ICR2 texturing, which is faster than
NCR1.

Since you have almost the exact same system as mine, There are two things
you can do-
1. PLAY VGA- It's much quicker, and you can have car detail on and a few
other things and still have a smooth frame rate.
2. Upgrade your system!
Trust me, play VGA, it's just not as sharp.

I'd follow the path 1) above. I have been trying to get hang of Nascar
w/ SVGA, but I can't just run it smoothly enough. My system is
Pe90/24MB/Diamond Stealth SE 1MB, and it runs ok with track and grass
details off, but somehow it still feels 'jerky' even at 18-20 fps.
There is a huge difference in maneuverability... the same setup with
SVGA takes me to the walls frequently (even with all details off),
with plain VGA (full detail) it's much easier to drive. Go figure...

In some, much lesser extent this applies to ICR2 too. But even then, I
somehow prefer ICR 1 for 'fun' playing. Perhaps I'm just a lousy
driver.

BTW: I'm using Gravis Firebird as a controller. This is a nice stick
as all necessary controls/views can be programmed in the ~10 buttons
available. And the throttle control is nice. I'd like to try some of
the cheaper wheels/yokes: do you have any experience about Suncom
G-Force yoke ?

How does the amount of video card RAM effect frame rate?  I thought that
it only affected amount of colours at a given resolution.
