I have been experimenting with using 3rd gear to drive out of the
draft, and 4th as a sort of "overdrive" for when I am drafting. As a
starting point, I changed 3rd gear to a slightly higher gear ratio
than 4th. Then I moved 2nd to what 3rd used to be and then 1st to
what 2nd used to be.
Using third gear like this translates into you being able to turn more
RPMs than you would when you are in 4th, but I am not really sure
there is much speed advantage. Actual lap-time improvements seem
negligible (but then, I am not the most consistent fellow out there).
The nice thing though, is that you can run a even lower gear ratio in
4th, which, will conserve fuel, and also give you much better closing
speed when you are drafting up on another car. Then, out of the
draft, you can downshift to 3rd and maintain your speed a little
better than you otherwise would be able.
Just dont***up and downshift to 2nd when you think you are in 4th
but are really in 3rd...
Any observations? The only time I can see that you would really pay a
penalty for doing this is leaving the pits on a green-flag stop, when
every split-second counts for gobs of track position...
