Question to this group. Has anyone considered apply cars such
as the Porsche 917, Ford GT40, and other cars of this vein to
the tracks of GPL era ?? Driving a 917 at Watkins Glen would
be a blast !!

The funny deal is most guys who raced the 917 with the exception of Vic
Elford did not really lilke the car.  they described the car as spooky.

Sure it would, and they should add the Cobra too (I am a bit afraid of
pushing mine too far on the road, as my real Cobra has NO shift+R option !).

In fact, it would be a great idea of making a complete sim like GPL with GT
cars of tthe same era.

I envy very few (if any) people, but you're one of them.  I wish I could
afford a real A/C.  Alas, I'm relegated to the world of diecast to fill
my Cobra habit.

And yes - I'd love to be able to throw a GT40, a Daytona Coupe, or even a
427 S/C around Le Mans.  Let's hope Papy seizes on this great opportunity
to provide us with a slew of different types of cars to play with.

Spooky, schmooky -- 239mph at LeMans, 257mph for the final CanAm version.....I
want one, always have, always will.

Well you can die many deaths in a sim.

IIRC, Porsche much improved the 917 after its initial showings, where by all
accounts it was downright scary to drive. I think they drastically changed
the aerodynamics of the rear bodywork.

A sports car sim of that era would be fun though.

The Glen, again? :-/
What about, in addtion to the Ring (1000km), Spa and others, also Le
Mans and the incredible Targa Florio, racing through the mountains and
villages of Sicily?

True, the initial 917 had a slim (airfoil <sp?>) "Long Tail" for
minimum drag and maximum speed at Le Mans, just like the previous
Porsche models (eg. 906) with much smaller engines.
With that tail, the car did not generate any downforce, but rather
upforce, and test drivers reported the 917 to be undriveable (and
simply dangerous) at high speed on the long straight on the 'Ring.
So, after many complaints and unnecessary changes of the chassis
(because the technicians did'nt want to give up any top speed), the
rear bodywork was changed (AFAIK the private Gulf team pioneered) to
the well-known wedge-like design, and the 917 became a winner.

Speaking of diecast, Exoto is coming out with a 1:18 early Corvette Grand
Sport..think its this month. In the same catalog issue that had that
announcment, they also mention some of the next cars they're doing which
include '65 and '66 Ford GT 40's. Their website (which was empty for the
longest time is now running

www.exoto.com

and they mention that a whole line of late 60's CanAm cars is scheduled in
both 1:43 and 1:18 scale. Their Cobra Coupe and 67 Lotus are remarkable
models.

The *real* dangerous part about the 917 though, was it's ALUMINUM
spaceframe!! The frames had a very bad habit of cracking up in the weldings
whilch made the car handle like Smith's famous "Pongo-sticks".... and/or
eventually snap apart!

Porsche's solution??
Well belive it or not... the filled the frames with compressed air or
welding gas and fitted a manometer (pressure-gague) in the***pit -
connected to the frame. So that when the driver noticed a decreasing
pressure on the gauge... he knew the frame had cracked and it was time to
park the car!!
