Where's the Indy 500? I'll tell you where it is. It's in Sega's
new driving game (Daytona, Sega Rally folllow-up) Indy 500, that's
where! Just as with Daytona, Sega's the one that has come up with the
big bucks to secure the rights. No big deal, seeing that Indy isn't on
the Indycar schedule anyway. But, a few things to note:
There are three tracks in Indy 500. The main feature is, of
course, Indianapolis which is a pretty faithful replica of the real
thing (this I'm not really sure about, since I never got the Indy track
expansion pack. I did play the original Indy 500 game by Papyrus
though). However, there are two other fictitious tracks that bear
striking resemblances to real ones. Is there a double standard here?
Some shady design work?
The "Highland Raceway" is a great-looking desert/mountain/forest
track. At one portion of the track there is a very fast left-hand turn
leading uphill. At the top of the hill, the elevation suddenly drops into
a downhill chicane followed by a medium left turn (with more runoff than
usual for a video game) then a high speed right turn. Sound familiar?
The corkscrew maybe? Anyone who plays this game will feel instant "deja
vu" if they've played (or even watched a race at) Laguna Seca on Indycar
1 or 2. Is lifting parts of a track legal? The street course is more
original, but also bares striking resemblances to Vancouver, Detroit, and
Miami...
Despite all this, the game is pretty fun. It features the best
graphics you'll ever see in a driving game, and the most realism since
Race Drivin' for a video game. Of course, the simulated Indycar does
some pretty questionable things. Wheelspin and oversteer at sixth gear?
Sure! Just yank the wheel to full lock!
